Fenwick has unveiled plans to upgrade the façade belonging to its Newcastle flagship, including creating a new central entrance.

The renovation forms part of the upmarket department store’s £40m investment programme aimed creating the “next generation” store.

The planning application, which has been submitted to Newcastle city council, includes opening up the ground floor windows, as well constructing a modern new canopy and grand central entrance on Northumberland Street.

Fenwick Newcastle store director Kieran McBride told ITV News: “Our Newcastle store has played an iconic role within the city centre since 1882, and this programme is all about continuing to play that role and more into the future.

“This new frontage will ensure everyone can receive a warm welcome into our store and maintain our position as the destination of choice for shoppers across the region.”

The retailer launched its first ad campaign last month in a bid to evolve the 140-year-old brand.

The adverts include slogans of ‘Quiet no more’ and ‘Give them something to talk about’ as it looks to reach out to a new generation.
