Below, we break down some things you may have missed during the week and what we\u2019re still thinking about.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From the Federal Trade Commission suing Amazon over \u201cdeceptive\u201d practices related to its Prime subscription signups to hair care brand K18 potentially exploring a sale,\u00a0here\u2019s our closeout for the week.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><strong><span><span>What you may have missed<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><span><span><span><em><span>Walmart and other retailers take on \u2018Prime Day\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Target may have succeeded in stealing some of Amazon\u2019s thunder by announcing its own summertime sale the same day <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Prime Day was revealed<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span>, but the mass merchant is hardly alone. Throughout the week, other retailers let everyone know that they, too, are hosting big red-letter promotions in July.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Like Target, Walmart\u2019s sale will last longer than Prime Day, which takes place July 11 and 12. The first-ever \u201cWalmart+ Week\u201d starts at noon ET on July 10 for members and opens to the public on July 11, with deals ending July 13 at 7 p.m. Walmart+ members will be privy to some exclusive limited-time offers, according to an emailed press release.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Best Buy is also jumping in with what it\u2019s calling \u201cBlack Friday in July.\u201d That runs July 10-12, and My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total members get access to exclusive offers and deeper discounts on select products, per an emailed release. Electronics and tech retailer Newegg is holding its ninth annual <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>FantasTech Sale \u2014\u00a0the longest running of the bunch so far \u2014\u00a0July 10 to July 14, with some presale deals starting July 5. A year after its launch, the brand expanded beyond its DTC channels into wholesale through a partnership with Sephora.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><em><span>The Container Store to feature Dormify for college shopping<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Ahead of back-to-school season, The Container Store is expanding its partnership with <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Dormify, an online shop for dorm d\u00e9cor, the company announced in a <span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>press release<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0this week<span><span><span><span><span><span>.\u00a0Geared toward college students, 40 Container Store locations will feature a Dormify display. The gremlin-like toys would speak without warning, utter strange gibberish and in other ways earn their reputation as \u201990s-era nightmare fuel.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>But for all the fears of demonic possession they generated, the Furby was no doubt iconic \u2014 and now <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>toy conglomerate Hasbro is bringing it back<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span> for its 25th anniversary. Hasbro says the \u201ccurious little creature and kindred spirit\u201d will return to stores July 15, in purple and coral colorways, according to a Thursday press release. Impacted workers will receive severance, healthcare benefits and career outplacement support.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><strong><span><span>What we\u2019re watching<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><span><span><span><em><span>\u2018Dark patterns\u2019 at Amazon under scrutiny<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The Federal Trade Commission this week stole some of Amazon\u2019s Prime Day thunder when it announced it has <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>sued the e-commerce giant<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span> over what it says are difficulties in quitting Amazon\u2019s Prime program. In court documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, the agency alleges that customers must contend with \u201cdark patterns\u201d \u2013 user interfaces that cause online users or e-commerce customers to make choices they don\u2019t want, or prevent actions they do want.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u201cAmazon tricked and trapped people into recurring subscriptions without their consent, not only frustrating users but also costing them significant money,\u201d FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a <span><span>statement<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span>An Amazon spokesperson by email said that \u201cthe FTC\u2019s claims are false on the facts and the law. The truth is that customers love Prime, and by design we make it clear and simple for customers to both sign up for or cancel their Prime membership.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The FTC&#8217;s case, including the allegations around dark patterns, follows on the heels of <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>a case filed in November<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span> by law firm Hagens Berman.
