That\u2019s a lot of revenue \u2014 and it takes a lot of additional work to achieve. That\u2019s why the holiday season always brings about a spike in temp hiring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re one of the many merchants looking to hire seasonal employees in the next few weeks, it\u2019s high time that you start looking, vetting and training people. Remember, you\u2019re competing with a lot of other retailers for talent these days, so the sooner you get started, the better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are a few tips that you can use in your seasonal staff-hunting efforts this year. Check them out and see what you can apply in your business.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>On finding great hires:<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone is familiar with the usual hiring routes of posting to job boards and using sites such as Monster, Indeed, and CareerBuilder. So rather than rehashing these points, this section will shed light on tactics beyond traditional job ad posting. Have a look at the following employee hunting tips you could try:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Turn to your best customers or fans<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll want to hire people who are naturally enthusiastic about your brand or products. The best way to find these individuals is by looking at your customer or fan base.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWho would be better to represent you and your business over the holiday season than a enthusiastic customer, vendor, or fan?\u201d says business consultant Jennifer Martin of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zest Business Consulting<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cContact any cheerleaders personally with a special offer just for them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>One example of a retailer is doing this vape shop (and awesome Vend by Lightspeed customer) <\/b><b>Good Guy Vapes<\/b><b>. Owner Shoaib Iqbal shares that they regularly hire existing customers as their employees. In fact, when they decided to expand their business, their first hire was one of their patrons.<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur first employee was a customer and we\u2019ve continued that tradition ever since. We mostly hire enthusiastic customers.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See if you can go down the same route in your business. If you\u2019re looking for new staff members, get in touch with customers and fans and see if they\u2019re interested in working for you. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Use social media and email<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way to get your job listings in front of your fans (and beyond) is to leverage social media. The email had the subject line \u201cWe\u2019re hiring for the holidays,\u201d \u00a0and the body of the message contained more information on the open positions as well as the steps that applicants should take.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-64901831311\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vendhq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/gymboreehiring-644x517.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"644\" height=\"517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vendhq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/gymboreehiring-644x517.png 644w, https:\/\/www.vendhq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/gymboreehiring.png 730w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\"\/><\/p>\n<h3><b>Talk to your existing employees<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having trouble finding new hires outside the company? Consider asking your existing employees for help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Doing so won\u2019t just make staff hunting easier, but it may also make onboarding and training faster and simpler for everyone. As Jennifer puts it, \u201cA new hire may also enjoy working with someone they know and their ramp up time to train might be faster because they\u2019ll be more engaged.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just be sure to set boundaries, she adds. Retailers should lay out rules for \u201cwhat is acceptable and what is expected when hiring friends and family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Get in touch with past employees<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think back to your previous employees, identify individuals that you enjoyed working with, then get in touch to see if they\u2019re willing to come back to work this season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, this will make prospecting and training a whole lot easier. <\/span><b>Since these employees already have experience working with you, they\u2019re already familiar with your store\u2019s policies and processes and will require less training.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Get creative with your job descriptions<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, you\u2019re not the only retailer looking for great seasonal hires, so you need to find ways to stand out. One of the ways to accomplish this is to write compelling and creative job postings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out what <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FUN.com<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is doing. The company, which also owns HalloweenCostumes.com, hires around 1,500 temporary workers during the Halloween season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And because of the large number of people they need to hire, the company has to write job posts that stand out. FUN.com\u2019s VP of Marketing Troy Eaves, told us in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previous article<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that they do this by getting \u201creally, really creative to attract such a large number of potential employees\u201d and by writing job posts that \u201ccreate a sense of overall joy from the company and people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have a look at this sample job description that they posted a while back:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-64901831312\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vendhq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/seasonalstaffing-644x488-644x488.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"644\" height=\"488\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider emulating their tactics when you\u2019re hiring new people. <\/span><b>Ditch the generic job posts and write something creative. Publish a job post that not only shows off the personality of your brand, but also makes applicants feel positive about working for you.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Be proactive and creative with your staff-hunting efforts<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of creativity, you\u2019ll also want to think outside the box when staff-hunting, advises Jennifer. Rather than just going with traditional hiring methods or waiting for people to come to you, why not be more proactive with your efforts?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cIf you have a few key employees and you want to find others just like them, then learn about them just like you would with defining your ideal clients,\u201d she adds. \u201cFind out what their hobbies are, where they spend their down time, and what they do for fun. If you find that a number of your ideal workers take yoga, then guess where you\u2019ll find more people like them? Yup, at yoga classes.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Showcase your team<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When putting out your job listings, find ways to showcase your existing team members. Let them do the talking and show candidates why your business is a great place to work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>That\u2019s exactly what Levi\u2019s did in a recent email inviting people to apply for seasonal jobs. Now, having seasonal hires poses a challenge for retailers because some of them may not be as motivated as full-time employees who are in it for the long run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to train, engage, and motivate them to fully exert themselves on the job. Here\u2019s how:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Use multiple training methods and materials<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Utilizing multiple training methods and materials can facilitate learning and help your staff pick up and retain information more effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>According to Jennifer, it would be ideal to have your systems or processes documented in a variety of ways. \u201cFor example if you want to teach someone how to ring up a gift card, have ready not only written instructions but pictures or videos showing the dos and the don\u2019ts so your new employees will know when they are getting it right.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same goes for operating your equipment and software. In addition to showing your staff how it\u2019s done in-store, prepare a written or recorded tutorial that they can refer to later on.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Pair seasonal hires with regular employees<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melissa also recommends that you let your old-timers mentor your seasonal employees. Not only will this help them get up to speed faster, but it\u2019ll also minimize having an \u201cus and them\u201d type of environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Communicate, communicate, communicate<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seasonal employees may be working limited hours, but this doesn\u2019t mean that your communication and interactions should be limited. When staff members aren\u2019t in the loop with what\u2019s going on in your store, they\u2019ll end up feeling less engaged. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevent that by constantly communicating with your team \u2014 regardless of their employment status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Patrick, founder, and president of MOHR Retail told us previously that retailers shouldn\u2019t assume that managers have communicated everything to employees, particularly those who work part-time. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>See to it that no information falls through the cracks by communicating (verbally and non-verbally through checklists and memos) with your team on multiple touchpoints. Jennifer Robin, co-author of the book <em>No Excuses: How You Can Turn Any Workplace Into a Great One<\/em> told Fortune that while saying \u201cthank you\u201d is essential all year round the practice is particularly important during the holidays. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s so simple \u2014 it only takes two seconds to say, \u2018Great job!\u2019 \u2014 yet, especially when things get busy, it tends not to happen,\u201d she added. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to verbally expressing your thanks, you can show your appreciation by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding really specific situations or actions on which to compliment your employees. (Example: \u201cI love how you arranged that retail display at the front!\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encouraging peer-to-peer recognition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Send them some social media love.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offer a token of your appreciation \u2014 gift cards, holiday presents, time-off, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Put cash bonuses up for grabs<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause of their generally lower wages, temps are highly motivated by money,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writes Rieva Lesonsky on SmallBizTrends.com<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s why she recommends that employers incentivize seasonal workers with cash bonuses or prizes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She furthers:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Consider holding contests with cash prizes (it doesn\u2019t have to be a ton of money) or setting goals for each temp with a bonus to be awarded if the goals are reached by the end of their employment term.<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>You could even offer a bonus for perfect attendance, since absenteeism can be a problem with temporary workers.<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><b>Offer them a chance at full-time work<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there are opportunities for full-time employment at your stores, be sure to let your temps know. This could encourage them to be more invested in your company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And since these individuals have already undergone a bit of training in your store, you\u2019ll spend less time educating them in the future, if you do end up hiring them full-time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Equip team members with the right tools<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give your employees tools \u2014 i.e., hardware and software \u2014 that make their jobs easier. This is particularly important for seasonal team members. They don\u2019t have a lot of time to figure out the techie bits of your POS system or payment terminals.
