3:10\" data-start=\"00:03:06.871\" data-end=\"00:03:10.007\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">Yeah there\u2019s a lot going on at Amazon one of the.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"3:10 - 3:24\" data-start=\"00:03:10.320\" data-end=\"00:03:24.236\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">If you kind of remember back in our queue to 2022 recap from their earnings they talked a lot about how they had over built their capacity for warehouses so that\u2019s the first time they\u2019ve done that since,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"3:24 - 3:28\" data-start=\"00:03:24.315\" data-end=\"00:03:28.148\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">oh I don\u2019t know 1995 and<\/span><br \/><span title=\"3:28 - 3:41\" data-start=\"00:03:28.029\" data-end=\"00:03:41.434\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">that was just like a line in an earnings call well now we\u2019re starting to see that they\u2019re closing warehouses there\u2019s been reports of them closing between five and ten warehouses I\u2019ve heard they\u2019re closing delivery stations and figuring all that out<\/span><br \/><span title=\"3:41 - 3:51\" data-start=\"00:03:41.327\" data-end=\"00:03:51.019\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">one of the funny topics is a lot of folks started contacting me and realize said things like hey did you know your mention and this Amazon article is like what,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"3:51 - 3:59\" data-start=\"00:03:51.200\" data-end=\"00:03:58.987\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">what turns out they have this technology they\u2019ve developed called the supply chain optimization Technologies,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"3:59 - 4:04\" data-start=\"00:03:59.204\" data-end=\"00:04:04.040\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">abbreviated sco T which happens to be my name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"0\">Jason:<\/b><br \/><small>[4:04]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"4:04 - 4:08\" data-start=\"00:04:03.740\" data-end=\"00:04:08.043\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">And for newest nur\u2019s that\u2019s actually the correct way to spell Scott is it not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"1\">Scot:<\/b><br \/><small>[4:08]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"4:08 - 4:19\" data-start=\"00:04:07.779\" data-end=\"00:04:19.129\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">It is yeah it was the 60s and my dad thought it would be fun to have a unique name and it\u2019s he was right it\u2019s made me infinitely google-able so I have a lot of very easy to find on the Google.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"4:19 - 4:28\" data-start=\"00:04:19.388\" data-end=\"00:04:27.812\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">I\u2019m very envious of my friend Michael Jones who is impossible to find on Google so so no anonymity for me,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"4:28 - 4:36\" data-start=\"00:04:27.987\" data-end=\"00:04:36.333\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">but anyway you know what\u2019s interesting is and I want to read this little excerpt from a Wall Street Journal article a thousand or something,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"4:37 - 4:43\" data-start=\"00:04:36.514\" data-end=\"00:04:43.045\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">you and I both know at Amazon because they have this engineering culture they try to take people out of most decision-making<\/span><br \/><span title=\"4:43 - 4:58\" data-start=\"00:04:42.866\" data-end=\"00:04:58.032\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">process sometimes they call it hands off the wheel so they have all these AI like one time we had a guest on that told us how you know frequently a vendor will be negotiating with an Amazon buyer through a chat and it\u2019s a bot on the other side of the the chat not a human.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"4:58 - 5:12\" data-start=\"00:04:58.327\" data-end=\"00:05:11.883\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">So they have this technology called Scott and what it does is it makes three different projections for basically the orders for looking out into the future it does a high medium and low and during the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[5:12]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"5:12 - 5:19\" data-start=\"00:05:12.394\" data-end=\"00:05:19.334\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">The high wasn\u2019t high enough so they were kind of taking the high and adding some percentage to it<\/span><br \/><span title=\"5:19 - 5:24\" data-start=\"00:05:19.190\" data-end=\"00:05:23.637\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">and building out the Fulfillment infrastructure and everything based on what this a I did<\/span><br \/><span title=\"5:23 - 5:35\" data-start=\"00:05:23.487\" data-end=\"00:05:34.795\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">well because the a I had never seen a pandemic and it obviously it couldn\u2019t keep up with the upside of the pandemics demand curve it didn\u2019t see the downside of the demand curve coming either,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"5:35 - 5:38\" data-start=\"00:05:34.934\" data-end=\"00:05:38.052\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">and then I think the humans you know when you when you have your,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"5:38 - 5:45\" data-start=\"00:05:38.137\" data-end=\"00:05:45.179\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">pilot like six to eight quarters into adding 10% to what this thing does and nailing it.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"5:45 - 5:53\" data-start=\"00:05:45.444\" data-end=\"00:05:53.117\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">You know they also didn\u2019t anticipate this in the bottom fell out and that\u2019s one of the reasons why you know they just kind of too,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"5:53 - 6:00\" data-start=\"00:05:53.244\" data-end=\"00:06:00.238\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">kept taking the Scott forecast adding 10 to 20% and then suddenly they found themselves kind of with their skis out over a cliff.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"6:01 - 6:09\" data-start=\"00:06:00.593\" data-end=\"00:06:09.354\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">This is really interesting that kind of in a way that the an AI gone wrong kind of caused some of the problems here so I thought that was kind of funny.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"0\">Jason:<\/b><br \/><small>[6:09]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"6:09 - 6:18\" data-start=\"00:06:09.120\" data-end=\"00:06:18.151\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Yeah I mean like the synopsis here is that Scott is the biggest money sink in Amazon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"1\">Scot:<\/b><br \/><small>[6:18]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"6:18 - 6:26\" data-start=\"00:06:18.368\" data-end=\"00:06:25.861\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">It\u2019s true yep I like to think because they listened to the podcast they named it in honor of me and somewhere in there is a robot named Jason I\u2019m sure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"0\">Jason:<\/b><br \/><small>[6:26]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"6:26 - 6:28\" data-start=\"00:06:25.855\" data-end=\"00:06:27.820\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Because you are their Nemesis yeah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"1\">Scot:<\/b><br \/><small>[6:28]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"6:28 - 6:33\" data-start=\"00:06:27.622\" data-end=\"00:06:32.531\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">Yeah retailgeek it\u2019s hard to do an acronym for retailgeek but I\u2019m sure someone there is is working on.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"6:34 - 6:47\" data-start=\"00:06:34.160\" data-end=\"00:06:47.403\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">Also you know as listeners know there\u2019s a new CEO and the jassy and there have been a lot of high-profile departures and it\u2019s not clear if he\u2019s cleaning house or.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"6:48 - 6:59\" data-start=\"00:06:47.632\" data-end=\"00:06:58.718\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">Um you know these these issues stocks down a lot of the compensation that Amazon is from stock-based compensation and then,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"6:59 - 7:11\" data-start=\"00:06:58.905\" data-end=\"00:07:11.487\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">you know someone has to be accountable for these problems so they had there was kind of this domino effect so there was right one Jesse took over there was two other people that were are parents Bell and Wilkie and they left,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"7:12 - 7:20\" data-start=\"00:07:11.650\" data-end=\"00:07:19.606\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">and then just recently this year a 23 year old veteran Named Dave Clark left and he ran the whole consumer business.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"7:20 - 7:31\" data-start=\"00:07:19.925\" data-end=\"00:07:30.650\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">Interestingly he went to a company that\u2019s been in the news a lot called Flex Port their CEO has been on CNBC and the all in podcast talking about how to fix the supply chain problems.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"7:31 - 7:40\" data-start=\"00:07:30.927\" data-end=\"00:07:40.121\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">So that\u2019s that\u2019s interesting that he was able to see your Flex Port was able to lure away a 23 year old Amazon bet.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"7:40 - 7:45\" data-start=\"00:07:40.428\" data-end=\"00:07:44.922\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">So there was some Sour Apples on the way out Dave Clark told someone that Jesse\u2019s just a,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"7:45 - 7:50\" data-start=\"00:07:45.085\" data-end=\"00:07:50.456\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">terrible micromanager and yeah he\u2019d been there 23 years and shouldn\u2019t have to be micromanage and that kind of thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[7:51]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"7:51 - 8:01\" data-start=\"00:07:51.400\" data-end=\"00:08:01.080\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">And then they announced that this the guy that ran North America consumer who previously had reported to Dave Clark his name is Doug Harrington he was moving up into that role,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"8:01 - 8:11\" data-start=\"00:08:01.267\" data-end=\"00:08:10.887\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">what caused a further chain reaction for those people that didn\u2019t get the Dave Clark opening one of those was Alicia bowler Davis she was SVP of global consumer,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"8:11 - 8:24\" data-start=\"00:08:11.074\" data-end=\"00:08:24.305\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">and she went to this online pharmacy called Alto Pharmacy and then Dave Bozeman he went to he was the VP of Amazon transportation services kind of the middle mile so she was if I understand she was Last Mile and he was middle mile,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"8:25 - 8:37\" data-start=\"00:08:24.504\" data-end=\"00:08:37.027\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">so they both left so that\u2019s interesting that the Fulfillment center they\u2019ve been building out and to the key Executives for the last five years or so left those not clear if<\/span><br \/><span title=\"8:37 - 8:44\" data-start=\"00:08:36.883\" data-end=\"00:08:43.787\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">that was because of this build out and someone had to be accountable or if they got picked away or what\u2019s going on there,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"8:44 - 8:54\" data-start=\"00:08:43.859\" data-end=\"00:08:53.846\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">so a lot of changes in Amazon at the upper echelons and yeah some chaos here as they re adjust for the new post covid normal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"0\">Jason:<\/b><br \/><small>[8:54]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"8:54 - 9:08\" data-start=\"00:08:54.051\" data-end=\"00:09:07.661\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Yeah and I mean almost feels like there\u2019s a little bit of a perfect storm of reasons for that senior leadership to start to turn right which historically they have had very little turn by the way right through most of their history<\/span><br \/><span title=\"9:08 - 9:18\" data-start=\"00:09:07.619\" data-end=\"00:09:17.534\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">but you know the the founder departs as you point out there\u2019s a ton of the overwhelming majority of compensation is,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"9:18 - 9:22\" data-start=\"00:09:17.660\" data-end=\"00:09:22.461\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">stock equity and is that becomes less valuable like those jobs are.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"9:23 - 9:31\" data-start=\"00:09:22.696\" data-end=\"00:09:30.940\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Are less sticky you know and there\u2019s just the rates of growth at Amazon are are naturally slowing down and it\u2019s,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"9:31 - 9:50\" data-start=\"00:09:45.404\" data-end=\"00:09:50.187\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">Yeah and then you notice some changes coming in the grocery side.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"0\">Jason:<\/b><br \/><small>[9:50]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"9:50 - 10:00\" data-start=\"00:09:49.959\" data-end=\"00:10:00.066\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Yeah so grocery ends up being kind of a really interesting part of this whole Amazon churn so the first thing to know is the new head of consumer that did win Doug Harrington,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"10:00 - 10:06\" data-start=\"00:10:00.138\" data-end=\"00:10:05.883\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">had previously started Amazon Fresh at Amazon so so,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"10:06 - 10:13\" data-start=\"00:10:05.955\" data-end=\"00:10:13.051\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">he is a grocery guy and his pre Amazon experience is with webvan which is sort of the original digital grocer.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"10:13 - 10:23\" data-start=\"00:10:13.352\" data-end=\"00:10:23.177\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">So he is a pure digital grocery guy obviously he\u2019s had brought more recently he\u2019s had broader roles it.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"10:24 - 10:25\" data-start=\"00:10:23.562\" data-end=\"00:10:25.394\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">It Amazon.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"10:26 - 10:35\" data-start=\"00:10:25.755\" data-end=\"00:10:34.738\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Then then just grocery but you know one would assume that Amazon Fresh is near and dear to his heart that\u2019s the only brick-and-mortar concept that still.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"10:35 - 10:45\" data-start=\"00:10:35.093\" data-end=\"00:10:45.014\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Sort of in play and growing at an Amazon so that\u2019s kind of interesting and historically there\u2019s been kind of a tension between Amazon Fresh which is.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"10:45 - 10:49\" data-start=\"00:10:45.309\" data-end=\"00:10:49.058\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">The grocery business Amazon built organically and Whole Foods,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"10:49 - 11:01\" data-start=\"00:10:49.154\" data-end=\"00:11:01.154\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">the grocery business that Amazon bought right and there have been times when they seemed like they were smashing them together and then there are times when they\u2019re pulling them apart and at the moment they\u2019re opening a chain of Amazon Fresh doors that compete with Whole Food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[11:02]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"11:02 - 11:13\" data-start=\"00:11:02.008\" data-end=\"00:11:12.842\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">You would assume Whole Foods is kind of upmarket expensive grocery and Amazon Fresh is meant to be well Market but like when it washed Amazon Fresh was a little more mid-priced,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"11:13 - 11:19\" data-start=\"00:11:13.046\" data-end=\"00:11:18.659\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">then we expected and Whole Foods is kind of moving down price a little bit more than you might expect so it\u2019s all,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"11:19 - 11:30\" data-start=\"00:11:18.869\" data-end=\"00:11:29.691\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">it\u2019s all been interesting they fight a lot over over Revenue recognition for online grocery orders and it\u2019s I would argue it\u2019s a confusing customer experience right now because you can order a.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"11:30 - 11:35\" data-start=\"00:11:30.377\" data-end=\"00:11:35.394\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Assortment of items with different prices and different service levels from Amazon Fresh and from Whole Foods.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"11:36 - 11:43\" data-start=\"00:11:36.079\" data-end=\"00:11:42.953\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">So it\u2019ll be interesting does Amazon fresh wind because that\u2019s Doug Harrington\u2019s baby or you know does he at least.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[11:44]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"11:44 - 11:54\" data-start=\"00:11:43.699\" data-end=\"00:11:53.770\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Put more more stock in solving that problem you know I would argue digital grocery is the biggest white space in the kind of digital retail thing and so it.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"11:54 - 12:00\" data-start=\"00:11:54.016\" data-end=\"00:12:00.211\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">It\u2019s not bad for Amazon that they have a senior leader that understands that space so it\u2019s that\u2019s going to be interesting,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"12:00 - 12:12\" data-start=\"00:12:00.422\" data-end=\"00:12:11.695\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">and then on the whole food side the you know the founder of Whole Foods has remained in places the CEO which is kind of surprising given that when was the acquisition 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[12:12]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"12:12 - 12:18\" data-start=\"00:12:12.212\" data-end=\"00:12:18.329\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Five years ago so five years sounds like a suspicious number for an urn out but.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"12:19 - 12:25\" data-start=\"00:12:18.816\" data-end=\"00:12:24.782\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">The you know he stuck he was the founder he stuck with a company for a long time like culturally he\u2019s,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"12:25 - 12:39\" data-start=\"00:12:24.969\" data-end=\"00:12:39.372\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">kind of different than Amazonian so when one might not have expected him to last that long but now there\u2019s a new CEO which is a long time Lieutenant of his Jason Bushnell boo shell rather and,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"12:40 - 12:51\" data-start=\"00:12:39.547\" data-end=\"00:12:51.427\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">whether this is the first initiative from Jason or it\u2019s a coincidence like Whole Foods has kind of announced that they are pivoting their pricing strategy in really focusing on,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"12:52 - 12:59\" data-start=\"00:12:51.589\" data-end=\"00:12:59.124\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">improving their value prop and reducing their prices and obviously there\u2019s a lot of Economic headwinds and there\u2019s kind of a.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"12:59 - 13:07\" data-start=\"00:12:59.473\" data-end=\"00:13:07.495\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">You know a big big segment of consumers that are concerned about the economy so superficial you go oh yeah it\u2019s obvious.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"13:08 - 13:11\" data-start=\"00:13:07.820\" data-end=\"00:13:11.455\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">That Whole Foods would want to get cheaper but I would actually argue.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"13:12 - 13:25\" data-start=\"00:13:11.684\" data-end=\"00:13:25.306\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">That we\u2019ve really seen and shout-out to our friend Steven Dennis we\u2019ve really seen like this very overt bifurcation of the consumer and there\u2019s a bunch of consumers that like do not appear to be changing their shopping Behavior based on inflation and,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"13:26 - 13:33\" data-start=\"00:13:25.504\" data-end=\"00:13:32.841\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">economic concerns and then there\u2019s a bunch of value-oriented consumers that are very overtly changing their shopping behaviors and you would.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[13:33]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"13:33 - 13:42\" data-start=\"00:13:33.496\" data-end=\"00:13:42.486\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">You know a lot of luxury brands are actually raising their prices right now and doing quite well and so you\u2019d almost expect to see Whole Foods lean into that affluent consumer,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"13:43 - 13:50\" data-start=\"00:13:42.696\" data-end=\"00:13:50.075\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">and Amazon Fresh you know try to try to Target that that value went into consumer but it appears they both have decided to go after value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"1\">Scot:<\/b><br \/><small>[13:51]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"13:51 - 14:04\" data-start=\"00:13:50.688\" data-end=\"00:14:04.112\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">Yeah it\u2019s super confusing as a consumer to figure out and sometimes what I want I want for things and it\u2019ll split the cart between the Whole Foods in the prime and like then then it\u2019s a hot mess at that point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"0\">Jason:<\/b><br \/><small>[14:04]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"14:04 - 14:13\" data-start=\"00:14:03.812\" data-end=\"00:14:13.216\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Yeah I can\u2019t get my weekly shop from either one like I like some of the items and my weekly shop are not available from Whole Foods and some are not available from Amazon Fresh it\u2019s annoying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"1\">Scot:<\/b><br \/><small>[14:14]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"14:14 - 14:16\" data-start=\"00:14:13.673\" data-end=\"00:14:15.638\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">Yeah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"0\">Jason:<\/b><br \/><small>[14:14]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"14:14 - 14:27\" data-start=\"00:14:14.196\" data-end=\"00:14:27.049\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">To add further customer confusion so Amazon Fresh is Amazon\u2019s grocery store concept what you might have thought that there\u2019d be a bunch of benefits to being a Prime member and shopping in Amazon Fresh.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"14:27 - 14:39\" data-start=\"00:14:27.284\" data-end=\"00:14:38.815\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">But you\u2019d be wrong until recently like there were no special Prime benefits for Amazon Fresh Shoppers and so they just launched last week a new program which is kind of a.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"14:39 - 14:48\" data-start=\"00:14:39.224\" data-end=\"00:14:47.702\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">It\u2019s I would almost call it like a traditional retail grocery Affinity program you basically get 20% off on a lot of.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"14:48 - 14:59\" data-start=\"00:14:47.955\" data-end=\"00:14:58.831\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">On an undisclosed random list of thousands of items where they call everyday essentials if you\u2019re a Prime member shopping at Amazon Fresh So this is you know I mentioned that Amazon Fresh didn\u2019t come out.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"14:59 - 15:07\" data-start=\"00:14:59.126\" data-end=\"00:15:06.727\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Quite as good a value as I was expecting well this is the big move to maybe make them you know compete more directly with with Aldi and.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"1\">Scot:<\/b><br \/><small>[15:08]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"15:08 - 15:22\" data-start=\"00:15:07.785\" data-end=\"00:15:22.074\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">Caught another thing I wanted to pick your brain on is a couple folks have tagged us on social media because they have seen the prime pay badging and new payment mechanism out in the wild have you had a chance to play with that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"0\">Jason:<\/b><br \/><small>[15:22]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"15:22 - 15:32\" data-start=\"00:15:22.489\" data-end=\"00:15:32.097\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">I have and I confess I\u2019m I\u2019m a little more perplexed than I was when it first launched so maybe like the 30-second recap,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"15:32 - 15:46\" data-start=\"00:15:32.236\" data-end=\"00:15:45.557\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">um you know Amazon announced this new beta pilot called Prime pay and it\u2019s essentially letting third-party sellers that are not selling on Amazon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[15:46]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"15:46 - 15:51\" data-start=\"00:15:46.273\" data-end=\"00:15:50.905\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Accept Amazon pay and.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"15:51 - 15:59\" data-start=\"00:15:51.188\" data-end=\"00:15:58.807\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Offer Prime benefits and have your orders fulfilled from fulfillment by Amazon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[15:59]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"15:59 - 16:05\" data-start=\"00:15:59.373\" data-end=\"00:16:04.672\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Like if their Prime members right so if your Shopify Merchant in you\u2019re selling cat litter,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"16:05 - 16:17\" data-start=\"00:16:04.733\" data-end=\"00:16:17.087\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">you know you can have a bad you know and someone\u2019s a Prime member and they\u2019re on your Shopify site you can say hey check out with your Amazon pay and and you know get your goods in one day or even same day,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"16:17 - 16:27\" data-start=\"00:16:17.160\" data-end=\"00:16:26.852\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">if our cat litter is in the Amazon Fulfillment Network and that\u2019s that was when they announced this beta and they didn\u2019t provide a lot of the details.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"16:27 - 16:33\" data-start=\"00:16:27.243\" data-end=\"00:16:33.299\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">You know my first reaction was that\u2019s a shot directly across the bow of Shopify.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"16:34 - 16:45\" data-start=\"00:16:33.745\" data-end=\"00:16:44.837\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Who had been making a lot of traction with shop pay and was making a lot of noise if not traction with their fulfillment systems and now you know Amazon swooped in and said hey don\u2019t screw around with these,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"16:45 - 16:56\" data-start=\"00:16:44.927\" data-end=\"00:16:55.984\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">you know barely scaled fulfillment things just put all your goods in the Amazon\u2019s fulfillment and when you sell it from Shopify will ship the order or when you sell it on Amazon will ship the order,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"16:56 - 16:58\" data-start=\"00:16:56.062\" data-end=\"00:16:57.967\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">and will give you access to the.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"16:58 - 17:08\" data-start=\"00:16:58.195\" data-end=\"00:17:07.545\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">The biggest bet best digital wallet in the US market which is Amazon pay right and I thought that was super interesting and I was frankly really curious.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"17:08 - 17:12\" data-start=\"00:17:07.948\" data-end=\"00:17:12.358\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">If Shopify was even going to allow its Merchants to use it which.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"17:13 - 17:18\" data-start=\"00:17:12.731\" data-end=\"00:17:18.271\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">It would have been way off brand for Shopify to not allow that but you have to imagine they didn\u2019t want to vote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"1\">Scot:<\/b><br \/><small>[17:18]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"17:18 - 17:20\" data-start=\"00:17:18.446\" data-end=\"00:17:19.617\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">Yeah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"0\">Jason:<\/b><br \/><small>[17:20]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"17:20 - 17:28\" data-start=\"00:17:20.357\" data-end=\"00:17:27.844\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">And so now fast forward a few months and we\u2019ve seen the first betas in the live in in,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"17:28 - 17:36\" data-start=\"00:17:27.922\" data-end=\"00:17:35.553\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">live in the world and they are all Shopify Merchants so first question answered at least for now Shopify is allowing its merchants,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"17:36 - 17:46\" data-start=\"00:17:35.716\" data-end=\"00:17:45.727\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">to use prime pay but there\u2019s a huge Nuance in Prime pay that I kind of missed when the beta was first announced but now it\u2019s glaring at me,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"17:46 - 17:51\" data-start=\"00:17:45.853\" data-end=\"00:17:51.429\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">um Prime pay will only fulfill your goods if you\u2019re already a Prime member.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"17:53 - 18:07\" data-start=\"00:17:52.830\" data-end=\"00:18:07.239\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">So when they first saw this I thought oh my gosh they just captured the whole 3pl market and no other 3pl is going to have any room because you\u2019re not going to be able to compete with the service level of Amazon and the convenience of the aggregated inventory and then the bonus of.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"18:08 - 18:18\" data-start=\"00:18:07.528\" data-end=\"00:18:17.797\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Of the Amazon digital wallet on top of all that that it was just going to be too compelling a value prop and so everybody every small seller in the world is just going to rely on Amazon for all those Services game over.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"18:19 - 18:20\" data-start=\"00:18:18.855\" data-end=\"00:18:19.558\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">But.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"18:20 - 18:30\" data-start=\"00:18:20.015\" data-end=\"00:18:29.930\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">There\u2019s about 100 million Prime members and there\u2019s about 240 million households in the US so there\u2019s still an awful lot of households that do not have Prime.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"18:30 - 18:36\" data-start=\"00:18:30.327\" data-end=\"00:18:35.614\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">And if you\u2019re a Shopify Merchant and you want to sell something to any of those households that don\u2019t have Prime.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"18:36 - 18:43\" data-start=\"00:18:35.981\" data-end=\"00:18:43.192\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">You can offer Prime pay for the Prime members but you have to have an alternative 3pl to fulfill for the non Prime members.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"18:44 - 18:48\" data-start=\"00:18:43.571\" data-end=\"00:18:48.125\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">So they really haven\u2019t put any of the other 3pls out of business at all they\u2019ve just stolen some of their volume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"1\">Scot:<\/b><br \/><small>[18:49]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"18:49 - 20:03\" data-start=\"00:19:54.255\" data-end=\"00:20:03.395\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">and then they promptly have started pushing the deals out like right now like just today and yesterday I\u2019ve been getting flooded with emails that say,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"20:03 - 20:16\" data-start=\"00:20:03.473\" data-end=\"00:20:16.332\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">they have a new brand for it and they call it early Amazon Prime Day deal exclusives so it feels feels a little desperate to be honest with you that you know they set up this big shopping holiday and now they\u2019re kind of,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"20:16 - 20:23\" data-start=\"00:20:16.363\" data-end=\"00:20:23.062\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">pushing the deals out with a before then I don\u2019t know if they\u2019re trying to juice Q2 or if there.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"20:23 - 20:33\" data-start=\"00:20:23.321\" data-end=\"00:20:32.557\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">One school of thought is if we\u2019re going into this recessionary period the more dollars you can grab out of that shrinking wallet due to inflation as well,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"20:33 - 20:37\" data-start=\"00:20:32.701\" data-end=\"00:20:36.505\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">get them sooner versus later so maybe they had set this up before<\/span><br \/><span title=\"20:36 - 20:48\" data-start=\"00:20:36.409\" data-end=\"00:20:48.204\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">things the macro deteriorated now they\u2019re kind of like wow I wish we could set this earlier let\u2019s go ahead and get some deals out I may be reading too much into that but I don\u2019t ever remember them kind of they\u2019ve always had you know.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"20:49 - 20:58\" data-start=\"00:20:48.872\" data-end=\"00:20:57.891\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">Black Black Friday and January or early October kind of things holiday deals in early but I\u2019ve never seen them,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"20:58 - 21:00\" data-start=\"00:20:57.987\" data-end=\"00:21:00.294\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">push Prime day as hard and early as they are now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"0\">Jason:<\/b><br \/><small>[21:00]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"21:00 - 21:11\" data-start=\"00:21:00.271\" data-end=\"00:21:10.979\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Yeah I mean they always have had some pre-primed a deals like it\u2019s not completely unheard of but I agree with you the volume seem significantly higher<\/span><br \/><span title=\"21:11 - 21:20\" data-start=\"00:21:10.889\" data-end=\"00:21:20.130\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">and it\u2019s funny that we still call it Prime day right because for a long time is over it went from like Prime day to Prime 18 hours to Prime two days and now it\u2019s starting to feel like Prime month.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"21:20 - 21:26\" data-start=\"00:21:20.419\" data-end=\"00:21:26.200\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Um which is interesting I don\u2019t know this comes into play,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"21:26 - 21:36\" data-start=\"00:21:26.404\" data-end=\"00:21:36.463\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">there are some consumer surveys out there that show less interest in Prime day than years past right and you\u2019re comping against a tough Prime day<\/span><br \/><span title=\"21:36 - 21:41\" data-start=\"00:21:36.427\" data-end=\"00:21:40.868\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">in a very different economic environment<\/span><br \/><span title=\"21:41 - 21:50\" data-start=\"00:21:40.826\" data-end=\"00:21:50.218\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">and so like it\u2019s possible that there\u2019s some concern like Amazon\u2019s rate of growth has slowed and everything else it\u2019s possible possible that there\u2019s some concern,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"21:50 - 21:51\" data-start=\"00:21:50.369\" data-end=\"00:21:51.492\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">that.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"21:52 - 22:01\" data-start=\"00:21:52.045\" data-end=\"00:22:01.287\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">That you know Prime day won\u2019t have the it\u2019s for sure going to have a spike but that it won\u2019t have the same spike it has in years past,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"22:01 - 22:08\" data-start=\"00:22:01.389\" data-end=\"00:22:07.590\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">um and you know so they\u2019re they\u2019re trying to you know find ways to Goose it more I you know.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"22:08 - 22:16\" data-start=\"00:22:07.933\" data-end=\"00:22:15.738\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">I don\u2019t know I do think one of the interesting Dynamics there\u2019s kind of like two opposite forces that happen on Prime day like secretly.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"22:16 - 22:19\" data-start=\"00:22:16.250\" data-end=\"00:22:19.091\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">The stuff that sells best on Prime day are Amazon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[22:20]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"22:20 - 22:27\" data-start=\"00:22:20.396\" data-end=\"00:22:26.501\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">But the penetration on those Amazon products you know continues to be higher so that that like.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"22:27 - 22:31\" data-start=\"00:22:27.000\" data-end=\"00:22:31.416\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">The what the law of large numbers just means like.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"22:32 - 22:43\" data-start=\"00:22:31.729\" data-end=\"00:22:42.845\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">You know not you can\u2019t sell a smart speaker to as many people as you used to be able to do because everyone has a heck of a lot of smart speakers right and they\u2019re they\u2019re frankly getting so cheap that it\u2019s not as big a win when they do sell one.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"22:44 - 22:55\" data-start=\"00:22:43.579\" data-end=\"00:22:54.611\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">And so then the other half is this long tail in there like one of the problems there so many sellers on Amazon there so many Lightning Deals that like the signal-to-noise ratio in the,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"22:55 - 23:07\" data-start=\"00:22:54.720\" data-end=\"00:23:06.870\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">the awareness of some particular good deal and the scarcity of a deal like all of those things that you would normally do that a normal you know brick and mortar retailer with you know constrain inventory,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"23:07 - 23:10\" data-start=\"00:23:06.912\" data-end=\"00:23:10.102\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">would do for a sale like they just don\u2019t work as well.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"23:11 - 23:18\" data-start=\"00:23:10.752\" data-end=\"00:23:17.710\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">For this Marketplace model and so I do think it\u2019s tricky to keep the hype and you know we\u2019ve seen you know<\/span><br \/><span title=\"23:18 - 23:32\" data-start=\"00:23:17.632\" data-end=\"00:23:32.017\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Prime day was modeled after singles day we\u2019ve definitely seen singles day lose some momentum still a big deal but rate of growth slowing significantly and reasonably that will see that at Prime Day to all that being said<\/span><br \/><span title=\"23:32 - 23:38\" data-start=\"00:23:31.838\" data-end=\"00:23:38.015\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">the way to think about prime day is it\u2019s it\u2019s two days of sales in one day which is kind of a big deal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"1\">Scot:<\/b><br \/><small>[23:38]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"23:38 - 23:39\" data-start=\"00:23:38.231\" data-end=\"00:23:39.355\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">Yeah<\/span><br \/><span title=\"23:39 - 23:58\" data-start=\"00:23:39.139\" data-end=\"00:23:57.634\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">and then I thought this was interesting that Amazon announced that they\u2019re going to use some of that data that we\u2019ve been collecting in their stores that don\u2019t have a check out the just walk out technology and they\u2019re going to be selling some of that data to Brands so they can basically say to our brand<\/span><br \/><span title=\"23:57 - 24:06\" data-start=\"00:23:57.418\" data-end=\"00:24:05.807\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">hey 800 consumers walked by your product three picked it up and put it back on the shelf and you know<\/span><br \/><span title=\"24:06 - 24:16\" data-start=\"00:24:05.735\" data-end=\"00:24:15.685\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">of those three they read the ingredients and then they put it back on the shelf and and then presumably there are some action ability to that data what what do you think about that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"0\">Jason:<\/b><br \/><small>[24:16]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"24:16 - 24:25\" data-start=\"00:24:15.980\" data-end=\"00:24:25.228\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Yeah so I think it\u2019s really interesting you know way before there was just walk out technology like we were starting to get some<\/span><br \/><span title=\"24:25 - 24:32\" data-start=\"00:24:25.210\" data-end=\"00:24:32.084\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">some very early technology to give us some insight about how consumers behaved in stores right so you were starting to get some like,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"24:32 - 24:45\" data-start=\"00:24:32.109\" data-end=\"00:24:44.908\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">smarter people measuring things that could do heat mapping and and you know we were getting these I could GI tracking technologies that we\u2019d put on on a small subset of customers to kind of understand how they browse through a store,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"24:45 - 24:53\" data-start=\"00:24:44.992\" data-end=\"00:24:53.296\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">because you know frankly for the last 100 years of Shopper marketing we mostly have been based on these like urban legends about how Shopper shop,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"24:53 - 25:05\" data-start=\"00:24:53.393\" data-end=\"00:25:04.924\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">and not having a lot of data and then e-commerce comes along and suddenly you\u2019ve got super granular data about how people pick products and what they glanced at and didn\u2019t buy and what they added to their card and then check out and<\/span><br \/><span title=\"25:05 - 25:11\" data-start=\"00:25:04.894\" data-end=\"00:25:10.939\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">what they you know added to their card and then took out of their car like all of this pre buying behavior that we get in e-commerce,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"25:11 - 25:23\" data-start=\"00:25:11.150\" data-end=\"00:25:22.783\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">we\u2019ve never really had in the store and you know the Technologies and the methodologies these match Panel test all these different studies we used to do we\u2019re really sort of Kluge,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"25:23 - 25:29\" data-start=\"00:25:22.843\" data-end=\"00:25:29.194\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">and so a lot of us have said hey one of the secret benefits of just walk out technology is that by accident,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"25:29 - 25:35\" data-start=\"00:25:29.393\" data-end=\"00:25:34.969\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">it collects all of this really valuable consumer data about how people behave,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"25:35 - 25:40\" data-start=\"00:25:35.156\" data-end=\"00:25:40.431\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">before they get to the cash register or before they consummate their purchase since they\u2019re I guess there is no cash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[25:41]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"25:41 - 25:48\" data-start=\"00:25:40.762\" data-end=\"00:25:47.949\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Um and you know we\u2019ve talked about that being a useful Advantage for Amazon and that they\u2019re probably using it too,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"25:48 - 25:53\" data-start=\"00:25:48.123\" data-end=\"00:25:52.894\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">um sort of inform how they design these new store Concepts,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"25:53 - 25:58\" data-start=\"00:25:53.105\" data-end=\"00:25:58.465\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">and so now like so many other things than Amazon does they take this this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[25:59]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"25:59 - 26:07\" data-start=\"00:25:58.826\" data-end=\"00:26:07.490\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Like you know competitive advantage that they have and they turned it into a product and sell it to other people so now they\u2019re selling those.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"26:08 - 26:19\" data-start=\"00:26:07.779\" data-end=\"00:26:19.076\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Those Shopper insights to cpgs and you know you\u2019re a cpg trying to figure out how people decide to pick your cat litter versus someone else\u2019s cat litter on the cat litter shelf in a retail store.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"26:19 - 26:20\" data-start=\"00:26:19.304\" data-end=\"00:26:20.001\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Um<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[26:21]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"26:21 - 26:34\" data-start=\"00:26:20.687\" data-end=\"00:26:34.176\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Kroger won\u2019t tell you a lot about how they make that decision because Kroger doesn\u2019t know but now you can get real data from Amazon about how they make that decision and Amazon and you can probably assume that there\u2019s a similar path to purchase at Kroger so,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"26:34 - 26:43\" data-start=\"00:26:34.339\" data-end=\"00:26:43.454\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">suddenly like Amazon becomes the market research firm for all of the Shopper marketing so I do think that\u2019s super interesting,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"26:44 - 26:50\" data-start=\"00:26:43.593\" data-end=\"00:26:50.443\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">um they\u2019re not alone Walmart actually has a store that\u2019s heavily instrumented like this that they watch first that\u2019s called them,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"26:51 - 27:04\" data-start=\"00:26:50.564\" data-end=\"00:27:04.216\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">the intelligent retail lab store that you know it\u2019s kind of a it doesn\u2019t have just walk out technology but it has thousands of cameras and sensors and they sell data from that store through their data licensing arm which is called illuminate if I\u2019m remembering right.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"27:05 - 27:08\" data-start=\"00:27:04.589\" data-end=\"00:27:08.110\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">And then you know Amazon launched a new product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[27:09]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"27:09 - 27:18\" data-start=\"00:27:08.729\" data-end=\"00:27:18.199\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Nine days ago on the 21st that I\u2019m really excited about this called Amazon marketing stream and Amazon marketing stream is,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"27:18 - 27:23\" data-start=\"00:27:18.374\" data-end=\"00:27:23.012\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">a much higher volume more granular api-based,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"27:23 - 27:33\" data-start=\"00:27:23.181\" data-end=\"00:27:32.693\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">access to all of the marketplace shopping data so that\u2019s you know data on traditional Amazon shopping that like,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"27:33 - 27:42\" data-start=\"00:27:32.843\" data-end=\"00:27:41.634\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">previously was locked up or you could only get for your own brand or you could you know you can only get in Amazon premium services.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"27:42 - 27:52\" data-start=\"00:27:42.218\" data-end=\"00:27:51.868\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Now it gets plugged into pack view in all of these of these digital media tools you get all this real-time visibility to have people are making purchase decisions and then at the same time.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"27:52 - 27:58\" data-start=\"00:27:52.109\" data-end=\"00:27:57.546\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">They\u2019re rolling out this that same kind of data for how people are making purchase decisions in a brick-and-mortar store,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"27:58 - 28:04\" data-start=\"00:27:57.733\" data-end=\"00:28:03.796\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">super long answer but I think this is kind of a big deal and I do think this is the future is kind of replacing,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"28:04 - 28:10\" data-start=\"00:28:03.988\" data-end=\"00:28:10.370\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">like urban legends and opinions about how consumers behave with actual data about how they really are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"1\">Scot:<\/b><br \/><small>[28:11]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"28:11 - 28:20\" data-start=\"00:28:10.695\" data-end=\"00:28:19.852\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">You do you think this stuff is kind of stand-alone or they\u2019re going to build this is going to be kind of feeding into this ad Network because they seem to be really putting a lot of effort into Excel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"0\">Jason:<\/b><br \/><small>[28:20]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"28:20 - 28:31\" data-start=\"00:28:19.552\" data-end=\"00:28:30.770\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Yeah I do so I think there\u2019s only so much so many brands that are so I\u2019ll tell you who\u2019s not in a position to buy that data is all the digital native startups that then cut a deal to get you know distribution through.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"28:31 - 28:41\" data-start=\"00:28:31.149\" data-end=\"00:28:40.752\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Right against the big cpg brands that can afford like have budgets to buy that data and then you know they have so much like institutional.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"28:41 - 28:50\" data-start=\"00:28:41.263\" data-end=\"00:28:50.300\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Impediments that then you know they all talk about how much wonder they are with that data but it\u2019s really hard for them to act on that data and do anything different than they historically have.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"28:51 - 29:00\" data-start=\"00:28:50.535\" data-end=\"00:28:59.674\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">And so I think the best way to make that data actionable is you know to filter that data into.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"29:00 - 29:08\" data-start=\"00:29:00.360\" data-end=\"00:29:08.099\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">New audiences and new ad formats for retail media networks right so like I think there\u2019s a natural.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"29:09 - 29:11\" data-start=\"00:29:08.670\" data-end=\"00:29:10.659\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Fit between those.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"29:11 - 29:22\" data-start=\"00:29:10.905\" data-end=\"00:29:21.733\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Those two products so I\u2019m sure we\u2019ll see more Integrations in that but I do think for really smart marketers and in particular the folks that are involved in customer experience design,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"29:22 - 29:30\" data-start=\"00:29:21.944\" data-end=\"00:29:30.242\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">the the raw data is is super useful and and you know gives gives Brands a competitive advantage that are able to get it and take action on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"1\">Scot:<\/b><br \/><small>[29:30]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"29:30 - 30:13\" data-start=\"00:30:02.704\" data-end=\"00:30:12.780\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">That red Commerce for the last couple of years at Google and he just announced that he\u2019s leaving Google to become the new CEO at Pinterest so the,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"30:13 - 30:19\" data-start=\"00:30:12.931\" data-end=\"00:30:19.006\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">the founder is stepping out of the CEO role at Pinterest and they\u2019re bringing over Bill ready,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"30:19 - 30:32\" data-start=\"00:30:19.096\" data-end=\"00:30:32.430\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">and to be honest that has the pundants whipped up into a lather because everyone\u2019s like oh man Bill ready is a Commerce guy he was PayPal he was head of Commerce a Google Now the fact that the Pinterest is bringing a you know a dedicated Commerce guy in the lead the company,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"30:33 - 31:42\" data-start=\"00:31:31.043\" data-end=\"00:31:41.805\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">how much higher buying intent that their users have then other other social networks Tick-Tock is leaning heavily into it snap is leaning heavily into it it\u2019s a perfectly reasonable hypothesis,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"31:42 - 31:48\" data-start=\"00:31:41.961\" data-end=\"00:31:47.652\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">the one unfortunate truth is nobody\u2019s been particularly successful at it yet and.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"31:48 - 32:47\" data-start=\"00:32:41.373\" data-end=\"00:32:47.220\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Google Insider will they replace them with another Commerce person will that person have<\/span><br \/><span title=\"32:47 - 32:55\" data-start=\"00:32:47.214\" data-end=\"00:32:54.935\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">some new ideas like you know will they be able to find a way to kind of Marshall some of the inherent assets Google has<\/span><br \/><span title=\"32:55 - 32:59\" data-start=\"00:32:54.876\" data-end=\"00:32:58.955\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">and be better at Commerce oh my God I\u2019d love to see Google lean into<\/span><br \/><span title=\"32:59 - 33:11\" data-start=\"00:32:58.866\" data-end=\"00:33:10.763\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">in-store Commerce more and help solve search and you know all of these retail media Network opportunities for brick-and-mortar retailers like I feel like there\u2019s a lot of untapped.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"33:11 - 33:20\" data-start=\"00:33:11.034\" data-end=\"00:33:19.855\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Opportunity there that I\u2019ve been surprised to see Google not succeed at and so it\u2019ll be like is this a new chance for Google to start anew.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"1\">Scot:<\/b><br \/><small>[33:20]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"33:20 - 34:25\" data-start=\"00:34:15.613\" data-end=\"00:34:24.765\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">You know there\u2019s not a board sea level and board level focus on it you know 21 if you\u2019re a Google.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"34:25 - 34:28\" data-start=\"00:34:25.126\" data-end=\"00:34:28.142\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">The sacred cow is the add thing and if you<\/span><br \/><span title=\"34:28 - 34:42\" data-start=\"00:34:27.998\" data-end=\"00:34:41.602\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">if you say something like you know what I want to divert 20% of traffic to this new thing then you know if you\u2019re not going to do that so so startups from probably more attractive because they have more flexibility and they\u2019re not stuck kind of in that innovators dilemma like some of the other<\/span><br \/><span title=\"34:42 - 34:42\" data-start=\"00:34:41.579\" data-end=\"00:34:42.467\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">systems are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"0\">Jason:<\/b><br \/><small>[34:50]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"34:50 - 35:04\" data-start=\"00:34:50.244\" data-end=\"00:35:04.112\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Yeah think about that that\u2019ll be my deep thought for today yeah so I think that one is super interesting I\u2019m gonna continue to follow that closely one side note like Pinterest has previously hired a bunch of other,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"35:04 - 35:09\" data-start=\"00:35:04.209\" data-end=\"00:35:09.364\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">I\u2019ll call them like Commerce stars and like one that stands out to me is.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"35:10 - 35:18\" data-start=\"00:35:10.068\" data-end=\"00:35:17.831\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">The chief technology officer from Walmart I moved to Pinterest Jeremy King and so I mean there\u2019s you know this is not the first.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"35:18 - 35:31\" data-start=\"00:35:18.258\" data-end=\"00:35:31.333\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">White indication that Commerce is an important Initiative for Pinterest so we\u2019ll we\u2019ll see how Bill does there I hope he does well so one other transition that I\u2019m getting a lot of calls about these last couple days,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"35:32 - 35:39\" data-start=\"00:35:31.502\" data-end=\"00:35:39.289\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">is Bed Bath &amp; Beyond just had their quarterly their Q2 earnings report and it was atrocious,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"35:39 - 35:46\" data-start=\"00:35:39.470\" data-end=\"00:35:45.839\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">so their same-store sales were down like 24 or 25 percent their e-commerce was down like 23%,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"35:46 - 35:52\" data-start=\"00:35:46.038\" data-end=\"00:35:51.854\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">um and you know folks may remember like a year or two ago they forced out the.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[35:52]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"35:52 - 36:05\" data-start=\"00:35:52.414\" data-end=\"00:36:05.495\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">One of the founders is CEO and they brought in a turnaround CEO this guy Mark Triton and I talked a lot about Mark Triton he was like very credibly one of the architects of targets exclusive,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"36:06 - 36:08\" data-start=\"00:36:05.670\" data-end=\"00:36:08.457\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">brand strategies and so he was,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"36:09 - 36:19\" data-start=\"00:36:08.572\" data-end=\"00:36:19.292\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">the chief Merchant that helped launched a bunch of products at Target that were wildly successful and he left Target to become the CEO of this struggling retailer,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"36:19 - 36:31\" data-start=\"00:36:19.316\" data-end=\"00:36:30.661\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Bed Bath &amp; Beyond shortly after they hired Mark Triton they got a new activists board member Ryan Cohen who bought a big chunk of.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"36:31 - 36:44\" data-start=\"00:36:30.914\" data-end=\"00:36:44.169\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Bed Bath &amp; Beyond Ryan was one of the founders of chewy and made a bunch of his money there he was like a principal shareholder and on the board at GameStop during all the,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"36:44 - 36:52\" data-start=\"00:36:44.302\" data-end=\"00:36:51.554\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">the craziness with Robin Hood and GameStop and Bone all that stuff and so,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"36:52 - 37:01\" data-start=\"00:36:51.681\" data-end=\"00:37:01.025\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">like Ryan kind of inherited Mark as his turnaround CEO and simultaneous with these like very disappointing Q2 earnings,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"37:01 - 37:08\" data-start=\"00:37:01.127\" data-end=\"00:37:07.977\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">they announced that Mark would be leaving and they appointed an interim CEO who\u2019s a Sugo of who\u2019s a,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"37:09 - 37:18\" data-start=\"00:37:09.270\" data-end=\"00:37:17.964\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">already a board member at Bed Bath and Beyond and former CEO from like Goff Smith and several other retailers.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"37:18 - 37:20\" data-start=\"00:37:18.193\" data-end=\"00:37:19.623\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">So<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[37:20]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"37:20 - 37:29\" data-start=\"00:37:20.326\" data-end=\"00:37:28.600\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">What I have found interesting about all this it\u2019s a really difficult situation but Bethenny on Xena in a tough situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[37:29]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"37:29 - 37:41\" data-start=\"00:37:29.466\" data-end=\"00:37:40.811\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">And they certainly aren\u2019t performing very well and they have a lot of cooks there at the moment with with conflicting ideas about where to go but I have seen a lot of pundits kind of.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"37:41 - 37:51\" data-start=\"00:37:41.034\" data-end=\"00:37:50.882\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Like dancing on Mark Triton\u2019s grave and talking about what a horrible higher this was and how stupid it was for Bed Bath and Beyond Beyond to go after this this.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"37:51 - 38:00\" data-start=\"00:37:51.285\" data-end=\"00:37:59.685\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Exclusive brand strategy that Mark was trying to execute and how like oh obviously this was doomed from the beginning and anyone could have seen this wasn\u2019t going to work.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"38:00 - 38:07\" data-start=\"00:37:59.920\" data-end=\"00:38:07.070\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Um and kind of writing him off and personally I feel like that\u2019s a little unfair like II.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"38:07 - 38:15\" data-start=\"00:38:07.341\" data-end=\"00:38:15.315\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Mark certainly turned out not to be the right CEO for the circumstances the Bed Bath &amp; Beyond was in but I actually think that that,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"38:16 - 38:24\" data-start=\"00:38:15.514\" data-end=\"00:38:24.112\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">you know Bed Bath &amp; Beyond needs to invent a reason for people to go there and spoiler it\u2019s not the 20% off coupon anymore,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"38:24 - 38:28\" data-start=\"00:38:24.269\" data-end=\"00:38:28.012\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">um it\u2019s not the treasure hunt anymore,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"38:28 - 38:42\" data-start=\"00:38:28.073\" data-end=\"00:38:42.308\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">like you\u2019re not going to win on assortment as a big box like against Amazon right and so one of the smart ways to win against Amazon is to sell stuff that people want that Amazon doesn\u2019t have and if you can invent desirable products,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"38:43 - 38:52\" data-start=\"00:38:42.500\" data-end=\"00:38:51.525\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">that\u2019s a smart strategy and every big retailer in America is trying to execute that strategy and Mark like frankly has been better than most of executing that strategy I think.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><small>[38:52]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"38:52 - 39:01\" data-start=\"00:38:51.917\" data-end=\"00:39:00.990\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">That strategy kind of sucks when you\u2019re hemorrhaging your customer base people don\u2019t have a reason to come to your store and then you,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"39:01 - 39:15\" data-start=\"00:39:01.062\" data-end=\"00:39:14.516\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">execute the first wave of your private label products and they all get trapped on a boat off the coast of Long Beach and never make it to the store right and so I don\u2019t know of in a different era if Mark strategy would have worked.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"39:15 - 39:28\" data-start=\"00:39:14.769\" data-end=\"00:39:28.139\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Ed Bed Bath &amp; Beyond I don\u2019t think it was an unsound strategy you know it just right you probably needed a CEO who\u2019s a lot more focused on being good at supply chain and cost-cutting and was willing to make some hard decisions about.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"39:28 - 39:32\" data-start=\"00:39:28.464\" data-end=\"00:39:32.339\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Curating the store assortment and stuff like that to kind of cut costs.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"39:33 - 39:40\" data-start=\"00:39:32.694\" data-end=\"00:39:39.634\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">Before you got around to launching these products and you know horrific timing that you tried to launch all these products like you do as a.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"39:40 - 39:47\" data-start=\"00:39:39.959\" data-end=\"00:39:46.755\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">During a huge supply chain disruption so I don\u2019t know what do you think you think it was a doom strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-spk=\"1\">Scot:<\/b><br \/><small>[39:47]<\/small>\u00a0<span title=\"39:47 - 39:56\" data-start=\"00:39:47.170\" data-end=\"00:39:55.780\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">I don\u2019t think the externalities are hard to pick out you know so you go from a supply chain crisis into a inflation.<\/span><br \/><span title=\"39:56 - 40:30\" data-start=\"00:40:22.870\" data-end=\"00:40:30.495\" data-spk=\"0\" data-label=\"Jason\">the future of Bed Bath &amp; Beyond so I think they\u2019re they are out there doing a CEO search it\u2019s going to be interesting to see what kind of person,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"40:31 - 40:56\" data-start=\"00:40:46.996\" data-end=\"00:40:55.559\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">yeah there\u2019s a there\u2019s a path where maybe they buy one of those if you wanted to like parachute in 500 private label Brands to try and restore that,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"40:56 - 41:05\" data-start=\"00:40:55.595\" data-end=\"00:41:04.945\" data-spk=\"1\" data-label=\"Scot\">that\u2019s one acquisition path that you can take to become interesting I don\u2019t know if you know if that makes any sense for the categories or whatnot but that would be an interesting,<\/span><br \/><span title=\"41:05 -
