Does familiarity still breed affection, or is Aldi’s dependable digital carrot beginning to feel overcooked as rivals scale up their own creative ideas?

Tesco, for example, is leaning on the star power of Anna Maxwell Martin and Roisin Conaty in a story about friendship, festive mishaps and the importance of helping others.

Soundtracked by The Police’s Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, the advert puts human connection and small acts of kindness at the centre of Tesco’s festive messaging.

Its three-minute film, The Wrong Address, follows former school friends Polly, played by Conaty, and Lizzie, played by Maxwell Martin, who unexpectedly reconnect after a Christmas grocery delivery goes astray.

After Lizzie discovers that she has sent her festive food order to a former address hundreds of miles away, Tesco delivery driver Polly recognises the name and offers to meet her halfway so the shopping arrives in time for Christmas.

Car trouble turns the handover into an unexpected road trip across the UK, allowing the pair to revisit their friendship and confront an unresolved falling-out from their school days.

The advert, which places human connection and small acts of kindness at the heart of Tesco’s festive message, extends the supermarket’s ‘Need Anything from Tesco?’ platform. Introduced earlier this year, the campaign is an evolution of its longstanding ‘Every Little Helps’ positioning.

Asda and Lidl, meanwhile, put music at the centre of the festive campaigns they unveiled on 3 November.

Asda has rejected traditional sentimental storytelling in favour of a higher-energy celebration.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="All of Christmas at Asda Price. BOOM!’

Rather than developing a single emotional narrative, the campaign focuses on five key shopping occasions: hosting, decorating, gifting, grocery home shopping and Christmas dinner.

Across four 30-second adverts and an additional digital edit, picture-perfect Christmas scenes erupt into larger-than-life celebrations set to a remix of Martin Garrix’s dance anthem Animals.

Lidl has taken a more knowingly nostalgic route, recruiting EastEnders actor Shaun Williamson, best known for playing Barry Evans, to front its 2026 campaign.

Titled Lidl Christmas Everybody, the campaign gives Slade’s festive classic Merry Xmas Everybody a supermarket makeover, with rewritten lyrics celebrating Lidl’s Christmas food range.

The music video follows Williamson as he spreads festive cheer among his neighbours, arriving with bags of seasonal food and gifts.

Former footballer and television presenter Chris Kamara, Capital FM presenter Kemi Rodgers and comedian Abi Clarke also appear.

Turkeys, Brussels sprouts, mince pies and chocolate gonks all feature as Lidl ensures its seasonal range remains central to the creative.

Williamson said: “Christmas is all about bringing people together, having fun and spreading a little festive cheer, so I jumped at the chance to help Lidl kick off the festive season in style.

“Putting a fresh spin on such an iconic Christmas classic was brilliant fun, and I hope it gets everyone smiling, singing along and feeling that little bit of Christmas magic.”

Like Aldi, Sainsbury’s is betting on the equity of a returning character. The BFG is back for a third year, extending the supermarket’s association with Roald Dahl’s much-loved giant.

This year, the BFG falls ill in the run-up to Christmas, prompting Sainsbury’s colleague Annie and her sidekick Fred to race to Giant Country with a van full of festive food.

Shown across television and online channels, the story sends the pair through a string of obstacles, including a run-in with the Greedy Giant and an encounter with an oversized Squizzly Scotch-Hopper, before they reach the BFG’s cave with a selection of Taste the Difference products.

Created by New Commercial Arts, with production by Rogue Films and visual effects from Electric Theatre Collective, the two-minute advert closes with the trio sharing a festive meal as Annie reminds the BFG that “nobody should miss Christmas”.

Together, the campaigns emphasise the strategic divide shaping supermarket marketing in 2026. Some retailers are chasing fresh cultural moments, while Aldi is testing how far a decade of distinctive digital characters can continue to convert recognition into relevance.

Click here to sign up to Retail Gazette‘s free daily email newsletter

A decade after the discount supermarket introduced Kevin the Carrot as part of its festive advertising, Katie Searles asks if Aldi needs to retire the […]

[13

post-17484","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-magazines
["GET
