It\u2019s\u00a0no secret: the world is changing. In technology,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0flying by.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a network engineer, that\u00a0means\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0facing new challenges every day \u2013\u00a0whether\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0network bandwidth\u00a0increasing\u00a0due to\u00a0AI tool usage,\u00a0or\u00a0security threats\u00a0accelerating in scale and complexity.\u00a0We cannot just respond to the needs of today. We need to play offense, future-proofing our networks for whatever unseen demands may come.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>IEEE<\/span>)\u00a0unveiled its Wi-Fi 7 standard,\u00a0it changed\u00a0the game\u00a0for Wi-Fi\u00a0infrastructure\u00a0by\u00a0bringing\u00a0higher speeds, lower latency, and greater capacity\u00a0to users\u00a0than\u00a0previous\u00a0Wi-Fi standards.\u00a0We knew we needed to upgrade.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With\u00a090,000 employees\u00a0and hundreds of facilities spread across the globe, this would be no small task.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Luckily,\u00a0in\u00a0Cisco IT\u00a0we\u2019d\u00a0already\u00a0been\u00a0laying bold foundations\u00a0for Wi-Fi 7\u00a0by maximizing every capability of the Cisco Networking portfolio, paving the way for a simple transition\u00a0on our internal networks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When\u00a0it came time for\u00a0us\u00a0to make the\u00a0switch,\u00a0it was\u00a0a light lift: routine, simple\u00a0and seamless.\u00a0Just as it should be.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before\u00a0the rollout: Cisco\u00a0IT\u2019s\u00a0head start<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

For us, the Cisco portfolio of networking\u00a0solutions\u00a0enabled us to\u00a0deploy robust and overperforming networks\u00a0<\/span>far\u00a0<\/span>before<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Wi-Fi 7 even existed.\u00a0This\u00a0pushed us\u00a0beyond the limits of Wi-Fi 6 and 6E, giving us a head start in preparing for Wi-Fi 7.\u00a0This included:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE)<\/span>: Strengthened\u00a0our security posture\u00a0through\u00a0the use\u00a0of\u00a0certificate-based authentication, preparing us for the advanced security requirements of Wi-Fi 7.\u00a0Because we\u00a0required\u00a0managed certificates on devices, we knew\u00a0the\u00a0devices could support\u00a0<\/span>Wi-Fi Protected Access 3<\/span>\u00a0(WPA3), the next generation of\u00a0Wi-Fi security.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Meraki<\/span>:\u00a0Cisco IT had\u00a0been\u00a0adopting\u00a0<\/span>Meraki\u00a0Dashboard<\/span>\u00a0with\u00a0<\/span>Meraki Access Points<\/span> for over a year before Wi-Fi 7 was released. This gave our engineers hands-on experience with the platform and with the access points\u2019 expanded frequency spectrum. This led to a 40% decrease in incidents reported in one of our sites.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Cisco Catalyst Center<\/span>: Enabled the use of AI-enhanced Radio Resource Management (AI RRM), which ensured the physical positioning of our access points was optimized before we even deployed a single Wi-Fi 7 access point (AP). This prevented us from needing to complete days-long site surveys. In one quarter, 39 of our 44 sites skipped predictive design entirely thanks to AI RRM \u2014 freeing engineers for more strategic work.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Splunk<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>Gave us a clear, historical view of wireless performance across every site. That meant we already knew which locations were healthy before Wi-Fi 7 arrived \u2014 so we skipped redundant site surveys entirely and deployed faster.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    These\u00a0helped us\u00a0acclimate\u00a0to\u00a0some of the new Wi-Fi 7\u00a0innovations\u00a0and requirements\u00a0ahead of time\u00a0so that when\u00a0it\u00a0arrived, the transition was\u00a0seamless.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Once Wi-Fi 7 arrived,\u00a0we\u00a0began\u00a0rapidly\u00a0deploying\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Cisco\u00a0Wireless\u00a0CW9178I<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 Cisco\u2019s highest-caliber Wi-Fi 7 access point\u00a0\u2013 across\u00a0every\u00a0workplace\u00a0we build\u00a0and refresh. We started\u00a0with\u00a0our\u00a0<\/span>newest office in Austin, TX<\/span>, and\u00a0now\u00a0feature\u00a0it\u00a0in\u00a0several cities across the US,\u00a0and several other locations worldwide.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Cisco\u00a0IT\u2019s\u00a0quick and easy\u00a0rollout\u00a0was\u00a0enabled not only by the\u00a0high standards\u00a0we\u2019d\u00a0enforced, but also by innovative features\u00a0built into\u00a0Cisco networking solutions.\u00a0Rather than\u00a0relying on\u00a0one point\u00a0product,\u00a0we\u00a0optimized\u00a0across the Cisco networking ecosystem, making\u00a0the\u00a0upgrade\u00a0easy\u00a0with:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Touchless configuration of\u00a0new access points with\u00a0<\/span>Meraki Dashboard\u2019s<\/span> Plug and Play functionality. No onsite configuration was required as we deployed at speed, cutting network onboarding time per site from 2 days down to just 1\u20132 hours.<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Deployment of the\u00a0<\/span>Cisco\u00a0Campus Gateway<\/span>,\u00a0which allowed us to support\u00a0seamless roaming and\u00a0enhanced security at even our largest campus locations.\u00a0With this, managing\u00a0networks on a\u00a0massive scale is\u00a0easy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Detecting, triaging, and resolving\u00a0issues with\u00a0minimal manual effort using Splunk.\u00a0This automated troubleshooting results in faster diagnosis, fewer on\u2011site interventions, and digital resilience as new Wi\u2011Fi 7 capabilities roll out.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. Validation of our existing access point placement with\u00a0<\/span>Cisco Catalyst Center\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0AI-enhanced Radio Resource Management (RRM),\u00a0which meant\u00a0for most sites we could simply swap in new access points\u00a0using existing AP positions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      With\u00a0the\u00a0power of the\u00a0Cisco portfolio, our IT engineers were able\u00a0to streamline the rollout,\u00a0deploying\u00a0Wi-Fi 7\u00a0with speed and ease.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
