{"id":17247,"date":"2026-08-03T16:26:47","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T16:26:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/co-op-head-of-partnerships-and-events-on-the-future-of-its-pop-up-stores\/"},"modified":"2026-08-03T16:26:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T16:26:47","slug":"co-op-head-of-partnerships-and-events-on-the-future-of-its-pop-up-stores","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/co-op-head-of-partnerships-and-events-on-the-future-of-its-pop-up-stores\/","title":{"rendered":"Co-op head of partnerships and events on the future of its pop-up stores"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <p><a href=\"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/online-workshops-list\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-496\" src=\"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/RETAIL-ONLINE-TRAINING-728-X-90.png\" alt=\"Retail Online Training\" width=\"729\" height=\"91\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/RETAIL-ONLINE-TRAINING-728-X-90.png 729w, https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/RETAIL-ONLINE-TRAINING-728-X-90-300x37.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 729px) 100vw, 729px\" \/><\/a><\/p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019ve been to a UK music festival in the last few years, there\u2019s a chance you\u2019ve come across one of Co-op\u2019s pop-up c-stores at the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The stores are part of Co-op\u2019s partnership with Live Nation UK, who the convenience retailer began working with in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The business has run more than 55 pop-up stores at festival events since 2014, and has operated more than 40 stores at Live Nation UK festivals and has partnered with Glastonbury Festival since 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In July, Co-op extended its tie-up with the live entertainment company until 2031, meaning many more of its pop-up stores are set to arrive at future music festivals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cA firm fixture on the live music circuit\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Under the partnership extension, Co-op is set to remain the official supermarket sponsor of Download Festival, Klarna Presents Latitude Festival, Pepsi Presents Reading &amp; Leeds Festivals and Pepsi Presents Creamfields Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The pop-up shops themselves, which average around 6,000 sq ft, sell more than 300 products, spanning breakfast, lunch and snacking ranges alongside festival essentials such as toilet paper, personal care products and alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Co-op head of partnerships and events Nuala Donnelly says: \u201cOur pop-up stores have become a firm fixture on the live music circuit since launching, enhancing festivalgoers\u2019 experiences with a proposition that has reset expectations of conveniently accessing the same trusted, quality own-brand and branded food and drink ranges available on the high street within the traditional festival setting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-209428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Co-op-Festival-store.jpg\" alt=\"Co-op\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1366\" \/>She also says that there is \u201ca great experiential element\u201d to its festival stores.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe provide entertainment for shoppers that are queuing, live DJ sets in the stores and various competitions for customers to win money can\u2019t buy experiences.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A growing opportunity with festivals<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Donnelly explains that Co-op renewed its partnership with Live Nation UK since \u201clive music and festivals are reaching wider and more diverse audiences than ever\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She highlights 2025 Mintel research that showed festival attendance spanned generations, with \u201croughly half of Gen Z and over 40 per cent of Millennials attending a music festival in the past year, alongside 19 per cent of Gen X\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCustomers are also increasingly open to brand engagement at these events, with activations at live events driving four times higher recall than traditional advertising,\u201d she points out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOur festival stores are the ultimate brand activation, making Co-op an intrinsic part of the festival experience and allowing us to turn that reach into genuine brand impact.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She also highlights that its festival proposition has \u201cevolved into one of our key drivers for new member acquisition\u201d over the past eight years, \u201cespecially in the under-25 age demographic\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFrom the introduction of member perks in 2022, the partnership has enabled Co-op to create more value for our member-owners, with access to exclusive prices and deals in the festival stores,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe focus on integrating member benefits to the stores has made Co-op membership indispensable to festivalgoers and generated sales back to our core estate post event.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-209429\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/coop-2.jpg\" alt=\"Co-op\" width=\"1009\" height=\"645\" \/>A community \u201cmade up of festivalgoers\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of course, Co-op\u2019s pop-up stores complement its existing high street estate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The exec explains: \u201cOur store strategy is consistent wherever we\u2019re located, we operate to serve the community around us and, at a festival, that community is made up of festivalgoers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHowever, one of the things that makes our festival stores unique and special is the people behind them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOur store colleagues are recruited from across our Co-op, so you might be served by someone who usually works in a depot, have stock replenished by someone from digital marketing, and be guided through the queue by someone from our buying team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI don&#8217;t think you&#8217;d find that anywhere else. It&#8217;s an incredible learning opportunity, and it&#8217;s genuinely led to some brilliant career moves for people across the business.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She also notes that the stores\u2019 \u201crange and SKU count\u201d are \u201cwhere you\u2019ll see some of the biggest differences\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe store\u2019s stock has been specifically curated to meet the needs of the festival shopper,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOur pop-up stores have more of a focus on food-for-now, with a light touch on food-for-later. We also over index on soft drink options, to ensure this key demand is met.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe in-store experience itself is also dialled up to match the energy of the event.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt&#8217;s more playful, more surprise-and-delight, than your everyday shopping mission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBut ultimately it\u2019s the same principle we apply on the high street, tailoring our range and experience to the community we&#8217;re serving. We&#8217;re just doing it for a very different kind of community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The future of Co-op\u2019s pop-up stores<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Due to the temporary nature of Co-op\u2019s pop-up stores, it could be assumed that they may present unique challenges compared to the retailer\u2019s high street estate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Donnelly explains: \u201cThe scale of some of the festivals are like temporary cities, with huge amounts of planning involved to build and maintain the infrastructure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSuccess is based on how all the different components work together within that ecosystem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe&#8217;re part of that, which comes with challenges, but it also presents an unmatchable platform for our teams to learn and grow, working through issues at speed whilst serving thousands of customers every hour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-209430\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/coop-4.jpg\" alt=\"Co-op\" width=\"989\" height=\"637\" \/>With more pop-up stores due following Co-op\u2019s extension of its partnership with Live Nation UK, what does the convenience giant have planned for its future set of shops?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Donnelly notes: \u201cWe can&#8217;t predict exactly what festival culture will look like in five years. However, what we do know is that live music keeps growing, audiences keep diversifying and fans expectations keep rising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSo, rather than trying to guess the future, our plan is to stay closer to it than anyone else.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSo we&#8217;ll listen to our customers and fans, and as their tastes and demands evolve, we&#8217;ll evolve with them. That might impact the products on the shelves or how we serve them.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She continues: \u201cWe want to keep delighting fans. A festival visit to our store shouldn&#8217;t feel like a transaction, it should be something people remember and talk about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThat means continuing to innovate, testing new formats, new experiences, new ways of showing up that feel authentic to each event.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe&#8217;re also not doing this in isolation.
