Haley and Team USA had their own \u2013 now world-famous \u2013 cheering section<br \/>\n(Check out @RyanWinn44&#8217;s posts on Instagram\u2026 it\u2019s worth it).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">There\u2019s a family connection here: my<br \/>\nnephews grew up playing hockey with the Winn brothers. My sister Betsy and her<br \/>\nhusband John were in Milano, screaming from the stands, while I was glued to the TV<br \/>\ntrying to spot them in the crowd. Both games went into<br \/>\novertime. Both were against Canada. And the men\u2019s win happened on February 22,<br \/>\n2026, exactly 46 years to the day of the Miracle on Ice in Lake Placid.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">USA! USA! The game where a scrappy group<br \/>\nof American college kids stunned the heavily favored Soviet machine. Today\u2019s<br \/>\nOlympic teams are stacked with pros we know and follow. But the 1980 squad?<br \/>\nThey were college players who had barely met before they hit Olympic ice.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">And they beat the best team in the<br \/>\nworld.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Rich and I first wrote about this back<br \/>\nin 2010, but today it bears repeating. The legendary Herb Brooks didn\u2019t just<br \/>\ncoach a hockey team; he built a culture. And everything he did applies to<br \/>\nretail leadership just as much as it does to sports.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Let\u2019s revisit a few of those lessons.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><b><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Forget<br \/>\nAbout MVPs<\/span><\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">We love a superstar. In sports. In<br \/>\nbusiness. In retail. But great teams don\u2019t revolve around one person.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">At the 1980 medal ceremony, team<br \/>\ncaptain Mike Eruzione stood alone on the gold medal pedestal during \u201cThe<br \/>\nStar-Spangled Banner.\u201d The moment the anthem ended he called for his entire<br \/>\nteam to climb up and joined him. Twenty guys on a platform built for one.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">That\u2019s culture.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Brooks understood something critical:<br \/>\nindividual recognition matters, but team identity matters more. When Team USA<br \/>\nbeat the Soviets, Brooks didn\u2019t grab the spotlight. He waved to his players and<br \/>\nheaded straight to the locker room.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u201cThis is their night,\u201d he said. \u201cNot<br \/>\nmine.\u201d Retail leaders, take note.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Reward individual performance, yes, but<br \/>\nreward team performance, too. Celebrate shared wins. Build pride in \u201cwe,\u201d not<br \/>\njust \u201cme.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><b><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Set<br \/>\nTeam Goals Together<\/span><\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">If goals are handed down from on high,<br \/>\nthey feel like marching orders. If goals are created together, they feel like<br \/>\nownership.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">And ownership changes everything.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">If your goals aren\u2019t written down,<br \/>\nthey\u2019re not goals \u2014 they\u2019re wishes. Put them on paper. Then gather your team<br \/>\nand walk through them. Better yet, brainstorm together. Ask:<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>&#8211; What should we be aiming for this<br \/>\nquarter?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>&#8211; Where are we leaving money on the<br \/>\ntable?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>&#8211; What can we improve immediately?<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">When associates help shape the<br \/>\ndirection, they understand their role in getting there. And people fight harder<br \/>\nfor goals they helped create.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><b><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Constantly<br \/>\nReinforce Effort<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Team building isn\u2019t a quarterly<br \/>\nmeeting. It\u2019s daily behavior. One retailer we know created \u201cin-store outlaws,\u201d small<br \/>\nteams tasked with asking big questions:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;margin-left: 0.5in\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">&#8211;<br \/>\nHow can we do this better?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;margin-left: 0.25in\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>&#8211; What do you need to do your job better?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;margin-left: 0.25in\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>&#8211; What are customers asking for?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;margin-left: 0.25in\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>&#8211; What are your victory stories?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;margin-left: 0.25in\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>&#8211; What are your disaster stories?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;margin-left: 0.25in\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>&#8211; And our favorite: What would you do if<br \/>\nyou owned this joint?<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Then \u2013 and this is key \u2013 have them report<br \/>\nback with solutions. Not complaints. Solutions.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Imagine what would happen if your team<br \/>\nwere trained to look for opportunity instead of just pointing out problems.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><b><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Give<br \/>\nIt a Chance (And Mean It)<\/span><\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Trust is not a poster on the break room wall. It\u2019s action.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Consider Bill Wygal of Bill&#8217;s Ace<br \/>\nHardware. He empowered his associates to resolve customer issues without<br \/>\nrunning to a manager for approval.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">At first, some didn\u2019t believe him. So,<br \/>\nhe formalized it: a Customer Satisfaction Program that put decision-making in<br \/>\nemployees\u2019 hands.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Were there mistakes? Sure. One<br \/>\nassociate discounted a broken ladder (not ideal). They talked about it. Lesson<br \/>\nlearned. Another sold a $200 faucet set for $25. Turns out it had missing parts<br \/>\nand couldn\u2019t be repaired. Smart call.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\",serif\"><span>Over five years? Two issues. That\u2019s<br \/>\nit.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">Most employees won\u2019t \u201cgive away the<br \/>\nstore.\u201d They\u2019ll rise to the level of trust you give them.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><b><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Motivate<br \/>\nLike It Matters, Because It Does<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Front-line retail is hard. It\u2019s<br \/>\nemotional labor. It\u2019s problem-solving on your feet. It\u2019s smiling when you\u2019d<br \/>\nrather scream. So, celebrate.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Instead of management choosing<br \/>\nAssociate of the Month, let peers nominate and vote. At year\u2019s end, let the<br \/>\nteam select Associate of the Year. If you have departments, create Team of the<br \/>\nMonth. And make rewards experiential, something they can enjoy together because<br \/>\nrecognition builds energy and energy builds your in-store culture.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal\"><b><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">A<br \/>\nFew More Power Moves<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;margin-left: 0.25in\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">&#8211;<br \/>\nDitch the once-a-year performance review. Try monthly check-ins. Small course<br \/>\ncorrections beat annual surprises.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;margin-left: 0.25in\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">&#8211;<br \/>\nAsk associates to update their r\u00e9sum\u00e9s yearly. You might discover hidden talent<br \/>\nalready on your payroll.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;margin-left: 0.25in\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">&#8211;<br \/>\nConduct a 360-degree assessment, and yes, let them evaluate you. Leadership<br \/>\ngrowth requires thick skin.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;margin-left: 0.25in\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">&#8211;<br \/>\nGive everyone business cards.
