{"id":15388,"date":"2025-06-06T05:56:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T05:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/interview-currys-stores-director-on-powering-up-staff-and-tech-investments\/"},"modified":"2025-06-06T05:56:00","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T05:56:00","slug":"interview-currys-stores-director-on-powering-up-staff-and-tech-investments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/interview-currys-stores-director-on-powering-up-staff-and-tech-investments\/","title":{"rendered":"Interview: Currys stores director on powering up staff and tech investments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <p><a href=\"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/online-workshops-list\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-496\" src=\"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/RETAIL-ONLINE-TRAINING-728-X-90.png\" alt=\"Retail Online Training\" width=\"729\" height=\"91\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/RETAIL-ONLINE-TRAINING-728-X-90.png 729w, https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/RETAIL-ONLINE-TRAINING-728-X-90-300x37.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 729px) 100vw, 729px\" \/><\/a><\/p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Currys has spent the past year upgrading its <span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> store estate through the launch of new category ranges and digital upgrades as part of its commitment to \u201cmake the customer shopping experience easier\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_188196\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-188196\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-188196\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/matthew-speight-2.jpg\" alt=\"Matthew Speight Currys\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-188196\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matthew Speight, stores director at Currys<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The investment is paying off as the electricals giant raised <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">its full-year profit guidance for the third time l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ast month, boosted by a 4% increase in sales across the UK and Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Currys kicked off its upgrade programme last May, transforming 65 of its mid-size stores to feature a wider range of its tech, improved store layouts and back of house improvements to support staff.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Currys stores director for the UK and Ireland Matthew Speight.&#8221;We felt it was important that we started to invest in the space that we sell our amazing technology in,\u201d notes\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We spoke to Currys UK and Ireland stores director Matthew Speight about how the business is investing to ramp up staff expertise, drive range expansion and bring retail crime to heel.<\/p>\n<h3>More in store<\/h3>\n<p>Speight estimates that <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cjust over a third\u201d of the Currys&#8217; stores have now received investment in its current upgrade initiative, including 50 of its largest stores in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Speight says that the upgrades are <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201creally about changing the space to add in more choice\u201d for shoppers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Alongside expanding the products in its core TV and computing ranges, the director says the business has also introduced new categories &#8220;that you perhaps wouldn&#8217;t have associated with Currys previously\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He explains that these are electronics &#8220;in the majority of cases&#8221;, which are &#8220;designed to be more seasonally relevant&#8221;, and that the brand is also seeking to expand in areas like health and beauty, wellness and pet care.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt isn&#8217;t just the space that we\u2019ve changed, we\u2019ve also invested a lot in the underlying technology\u201d around the shopfloor, he adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This includes a digital queuing system to its 298 store portfolio, allowing colleagues to process customer orders and better manage their wait time expectations to speak to a sales associate.<\/p>\n<p>Currys rolled out headsets to all of its UK and Ireland stores last month and has introduced electronic shelf edge labels to 100 of its stores.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe&#8217;re improving things for customers but also for our colleagues to unlock their time and ability to serve customers more effectively, and to connect to each other and feel safe,&#8221; says Speight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-177244\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Retail-colleague-showing-customer-a-television.jpg\" alt=\"Currys \" width=\"1181\" height=\"787\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speight says the retailer has been seeing a \u201cgood performance\u201d from its store upgrades, both from an \u201cin-store and omnichannel perspective\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Its peak trading update, covering the 10 weeks to 4 January, Currys reported that omnichannel sales were growing strongly driven by a 24% boost in online in-store orders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In terms of more store upgrades on the way, Speight says that Currys is \u201ccontinuing to explore what\u2019s next for us,\u201d and has a store relocation in Cambridge coming up next year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOnce we&#8217;ve delivered that, we&#8217;ll then probably look to roll out another phase of space optimisation,&#8221; he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Cracking down on retail crime<\/h3>\n<p>Currys\u2019 investment into its stores also includes an increased spend on security measures to protect staff amid the rise in retail crime, which has skyrocketed over the last 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>The British Retail Consortium reported that shoplifting and violence against retail staff was at &#8220;record levels&#8221;, <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with over 2,000 incidents occurring daily in UK shops.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Speight shares that its been a &#8220;tough year&#8221; for Currys, adding that the business &#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">saw a rapid increase in aggressive theft that peaked in the summer&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSince then, in the last two months of our financial year, we\u2019ve seen a 58% reduction and that\u2019s a good sign that coincides with a lot of activity.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speight explains Currys has done &#8220;a lot of work to protect the products\u201d by utilising tools such as &#8220;CCTV, headsets, stronger laptop clamps, cabinet alarms, and mobile reporting apps\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The retailer made its<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201clargest ever\u201d safety investment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to tackle retail crime in April, which saw\u00a0<\/span>increased spending on security personnel and surveillance, <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">public display monitors upgraded in high-risk stores and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">enhanced product security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe most important people in our business are our front line colleagues, and when you read and see and talk and listen to our colleagues in the stores and you hear some of the examples they\u2019ve got to put up with it\u2019s simply not good enough,&#8221; says Speight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPhysical and verbal abuse, there\u2019s no place for it. I think we fundamentally recognised an opportunity to be stronger and better for our colleagues, so we\u2019ve done quite a lot in the last 12 months and there\u2019s a lot more for us to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Currys has now rolled out\u00a0retail crime platform Auror to all of its stores following a trial in two regions earlier this year which results in 10 repeat offenders being caught, three arrests, and prevented the theft of &#8220;nearly \u00a325,000 worth of kit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speight <\/span>explains that the platform &#8220;helps us speed up and connect better with local police and response units so that our colleagues will very quickly be able to get the responses they need&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In some of Currys\u2019 biggest stores, Speight notes the retailer has also decided to close its second door, meaning they have a \u201csingle access one in one out\u201d system for shoppers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Though Speight explains the business has had to be mindful of how it boosts security in its stores while not impacting the consumer experience too much.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMost customers want to come into our stores as a showroom for electronics,&#8221; he notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey want to see, they want to touch, they want to try the technology, so it\u2019s a real fine balance between locking it all down and having it all in the warehouse like Argos versus our environment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-162704\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Currys-supplied-e1715845453899.jpg\" alt=\"Currys \" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Investing \u2018more than ever\u2019 in staff development<\/h3>\n<p>As well as the physical and technical upgrades to its estate, Speight says Currys is investing <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cmore now than it ever has&#8221; <\/span>in its retail staff.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201cIf I go back to the principles that we\u2019re aiming for, to make sure we\u2019ve got the very best talent at the top of its game, highly engaged, working as one business, and living our vision and values, we have to walk the talk,&#8221; he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTo have expert colleagues &#8211; that\u2019s not going to happen by chance. You\u2019ve got to dedicate time and focus and create an environment where that\u2019s possible and ultimately inevitable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Speight explains that Currys runs a supplier education scheme where staff are &#8220;allocated training by brands&#8221; to enable them to grow their expertise, with a focus on &#8220;major domestic appliance products, white label goods or TVs&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He says the retailer has also significantly ramped up its level of &#8220;face-to-face training&#8221; post-Covid &#8211; be it computing academies, training with sales managers, or the business running its first academy for Currys 300 general managers in a decade in September last year. The retailer will roll out similar academies for sales managers and aspiring managers in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-187990\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/currys-careers.jpg\" alt=\"Currys\" width=\"2764\" height=\"1486\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Currys invested \u00a38m into boosting the hourly pay for more than 20,000 store-based colleagues earlier this year, as well as increasing its bonus programme to up to \u00a33,000 per year.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The executive also insists that Currys is standing firm with its flexible working policy &#8211; which includes adaptable shift patterns for retail and distribution staff &#8211; despite the National Insurance rise from last month making it more expensive to hire part time roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere\u2019s a brave new world that means you don\u2019t have to have full time managers.
