Too many<br \/>\npeople assume that once they land a media opportunity that everyone is going to<br \/>\nsee it. I often tell them that it\u2019s better to throw away your ego and assume,<br \/>\ninstead, that no one is going to see it. It takes extra legwork to magnify<br \/>\nthese valuable experiences to build your brand and grow your business, and to<br \/>\nget your story out to the masses. Here are seven tips to maximize your media<br \/>\nassets.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%\"><b><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Tip<br \/>\n#1: Understand the value of media exposure<\/span><\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">First,<br \/>\nit\u2019s important to understand why you seek media coverage, and what it can do<br \/>\nfor you. Media experiences \u2013 whether you\u2019re quoted in a news article, a guest<br \/>\non a podcast or an expert on a TV news segment \u2013 are not one-shot<br \/>\nopportunities. Each experience is a valuable digital asset. Just as you<br \/>\naccumulate assets in a financial portfolio, you accumulate digital media assets<br \/>\nwith your PR work. Once you have them, it\u2019s time to use digital marketing and<br \/>\nsocial media to make the most of them for branding, website SEO and social<br \/>\nmedia engagement with prospects and clients.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%\"><b><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Tip<br \/>\n#2: Use photos and recaps<\/span><\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">I<br \/>\nalways tell my clients you have the opportunity to shine before, during and<br \/>\nafter a news interview. Take a selfie or have someone take a photo of you with<br \/>\nthe journalist or host after an in-person interview. Share it on social or use<br \/>\nit when you share links with others.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">One<br \/>\ngreat way to distribute photos and the entire media asset is to write a recap<br \/>\nblog on your website and embed a link to the original content. This is<br \/>\nespecially helpful for podcasts, which may run longer, and your audience may<br \/>\nnot have the time to listen to the entire episode, but you give them a link in<br \/>\ncase they do have the time. Newsletters are another great distribution<br \/>\nopportunity. Add a recap to your newsletter and embed the link in it. I\u2019ve had<br \/>\nclients who have received tremendous engagement through newsletters because<br \/>\nthis audience has opted in to receive your content and is very engaged.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%\"><b><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Tip<br \/>\n#3: Ask for shareable links<\/span><\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">If<br \/>\nyou are part of a news interview, make sure to ask if you will receive or will<br \/>\nhave access to a shareable link to the content. In some cases, you will not<br \/>\nautomatically get one. You may have to purchase it. That\u2019s okay. They typically<br \/>\ncost between $50 and $200. Before you ask, have some budget set aside and<br \/>\nexpect to pay; so, if you don\u2019t need to, all the better. If you are working<br \/>\nwith a PR professional, ask if they include these fees in their service. Some<br \/>\ndo, some don\u2019t. I also always tell my clients to order the MP4s of a TV story<br \/>\nto upload to their YouTube channel, and to embed that YouTube link into blogs<br \/>\nor their press page content.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%\"><b><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Tip<br \/>\n#4: Ask about paywalls<\/span><\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Always<br \/>\nask if your information in an article or news segment will be public or behind<br \/>\na paywall. If it is behind a paywall, you likely will not be able to post an<br \/>\naccessible link on your social media accounts or elsewhere. So, podcasters who have a YouTube page make for better sharing on<br \/>\nsocial media. Sometimes, podcasts episodes may also be hidden behind a paywall.<br \/>\nEven though a podcaster has a busy YouTube page, don\u2019t assume you\u2019ll be on it.<br \/>\nThey may have plans for the piece of content to be distributed to a more<br \/>\nlimited audience behind a paywall. Again, always ask.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%\"><b><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Tip<br \/>\n#6: Remember to tag others with social shares<\/span><\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;font-size: large\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%\"><span style=\",serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Always<br \/>\ninclude your media appearances on your website and company social media pages.<br \/>\nBut it\u2019s also a good idea to post it on personal social channels as well.<br \/>\nAnother smart move is to find the other sources in the story and tag them on<br \/>\nsocial channels with your posts. The journalists and media stations also love<br \/>\nto be tagged. In fact, many journalists expect you to share media posts and tag<br \/>\nthem on LinkedIn, X (formerly known as Twitter) and Instagram.
