{"id":14965,"date":"2025-03-22T04:05:35","date_gmt":"2025-03-22T04:05:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/10-retailers-cutting-jobs-in-2025\/"},"modified":"2025-03-22T04:05:35","modified_gmt":"2025-03-22T04:05:35","slug":"10-retailers-cutting-jobs-in-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/10-retailers-cutting-jobs-in-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"10 retailers cutting jobs in 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <p><a href=\"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/online-workshops-list\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-496\" src=\"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/RETAIL-ONLINE-TRAINING-728-X-90.png\" alt=\"Retail Online Training\" width=\"729\" height=\"91\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/RETAIL-ONLINE-TRAINING-728-X-90.png 729w, https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/RETAIL-ONLINE-TRAINING-728-X-90-300x37.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 729px) 100vw, 729px\" \/><\/a><\/p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been a bleak start to 2025 for those in the retail industry as retailers restructure their operations in the face of increasing taxes and economic uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>It comes as the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed this week that the sector had slashed almost a quarter of a million jobs over the past five years.<\/p>\n<p>Retail Gazette takes a look at the retailers that have made job cuts in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<h3>Aldi<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-175936\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Aldi-store-e1730825466134.jpg\" alt=\"Aldi\" width=\"868\" height=\"535\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It emerged at the end of last month that Aldi was <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">consulting over plans to restructure some of its head office divisions in a move that could see 350 roles at risk of redundancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The reshuffle will<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> impact some buying department positions, including non-food, finance and some back-office functions. The supermarket chain <\/span>is seeking to expand the amount of buying roles at its Atherstone head office.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Aldi said: \u201cTo support our continued growth and to offer the best experience to our customers, we are consulting over proposals to restructure some Head Office teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo customer facing roles are affected, and no final decisions will be made until the consultation process is complete.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Adidas<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-127463\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/shutterstock_1465483622.jpg\" alt=\"Adidas\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/>Adidas confirmed it was slashing up to 500 roles at its Herzogenaurach headquarters earlier this month, under a wider strategy to lower operational complexity and reduce costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to CEO\u00a0Bj\u00f6rn Gulden, the sportswear giant had identified these roles as \u201cobsolete\u201d during the restructure designed to streamline its headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>It comes as the company lowered its profit forecast for 2025, with Gulden warning that the company\u2019s operating profit will be significantly below analysts\u2019 expectations.<\/p>\n<h3>Frasers Group<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-184113\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/frasers-shutterstock_2559525881.webp\" alt=\"Frasers\" width=\"1440\" height=\"806\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Frasers Group is cutting 30% of employees in its design and editorial teams under the company&#8217;s latest restructure.<\/p>\n<p>The retail giant has entered a consultation with staff members across its London HQ and Shirebrook offices.The redundancies are believed to largely impact recent hires, with managerial positions remaining unaffected.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in the company, the group is closing three of its standalone Flannels Junior stores<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0in Bluewater, Westfield Stratford and Westfield White City, leading to store staff being made redundant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>In The Style<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-132004\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/RG-image-1.jpg\" alt=\"In The Style\" width=\"833\" height=\"555\" \/>Fast fashion retailer In The Style slashed at least 17 roles at the end of February ahead of its collapse this month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The retailer, which was bought out of administration this week, informed impacted staff in a group meeting, with some employees being dismissed without receiving their most recent pay checks.<\/p>\n<p>The business <span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">has since been rescued from administration by Alps Sourcing Limited, saving 87 jobs in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>New Look<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-149962\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/nre-look_shutterstock.jpg\" alt=\"New Look\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/>Last month, New Look announced it was exiting the Irish market and would be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">shutting all of its 26 shops across the Republic of Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0fashion retailer said it was exiting the market after 22 years following \u201cseveral years of sustained losses and challenging market conditions\u201d.\u00a0The move saw around 347 store colleagues made redundant.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The retailer added the appointment of liquidators at KPMG \u201cwas not taken lightly&#8221;, but that its Irish arm was no longer viable following a strategic review.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>New Look said it was now set to refocus its investment on its UK arm and digital offering.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the brand said: &#8220;We remain confident in the UK market and take pride in offering our customers great-value, high-quality fashion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Ocado<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-163966\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Ocado-website.jpg\" alt=\"Ocado\" width=\"4500\" height=\"3376\" \/>Ocado is reducing its research and development (R&amp;D) team across the UK and globally in efforts to return to profitability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The business narrowed its pre-tax losses to \u00a3374.5m for the year to 1 December, up from the \u00a3393.6m loss the year prior.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Its plans to cut costs comes as the group has invested more than \u00a3800m into its workforce over the past four years. The brand runs around eight R&amp;D sites in various countries, with roughly half in the UK.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although CEO Tim Steiner did not specify the number of job losses, he insisted it would be \u201csignificantly\u201d fewer than the 1,000 redundancies made across the company during 2023-24.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Seasalt<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-133405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/shutterstock_1814631398.jpg\" alt=\"Seasalt\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/>Cornish fashion brand Seasalt warned it would be making \u201ca number\u201d of redundancies across its operations to cut costs ahead of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u201cincreased tax burdens following the budget\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The retailer placed an unspecified number of jobs into consultation, having \u201cthoroughly\u201d reviewed its cost base.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seasalt said the measures would allow it to \u201ccontinue investing in our growth plans\u201d while dealing with hiked employer National Insurance contributions and \u201ca continued decline in positive customer sentiment and rising inflation rates\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Select Fashion<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-184082\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/shutterstock_324471488.jpg\" alt=\"Select Fashion\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/>Select Fashion is thought to be on the brink of collapse, with 35 shops expected to shut across the UK after closing 35 already this month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The retailer appointed advisors at Moorfields to manage a liquidation process and &#8220;hundreds of staff members&#8221; are expected to be impacted, The Sun reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Workers may not be given redundancy pay following the chain\u2019s collapse, according to the newspaper.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Schuh<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-64815\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Schuh_fashion_shoes_sign_ST.jpg\" alt=\"Schuh \" width=\"817\" height=\"545\" \/>Schuh cut 39 jobs in its head office and stores last week, with some roles going on a voluntary basis, under a broader restructure to drive down costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The footwear giant\u2019s president Colin Temple said: \u201cDue to ongoing economic challenges, we recently made the difficult decision to restructure certain areas of our business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis restructure includes a combination of voluntary and compulsory redundancies across our stores and head office locations, resulting in 39 roles being made redundant across the whole business.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Job cuts at the brand were initially reported at the end of January, when it was revealed Schuh had begun a voluntary redundancy process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Quiz<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-124581\" src=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/QUIZ-Arndale-store-696x419-1-1-1-1-1-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Quiz\" width=\"842\" height=\"507\" \/>Quiz fell into administration last month, leading to the closure of 23 shops and the axing of around 200 roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The clothing brand, <\/span>which delisted from the\u00a0London stock exchange earlier this year, appointed Teneo as administrator after ongoing financial struggles.<\/p>\n<p>A pre-pack administration deal is set to see the remaining assets acquired by Orion Retail, a subsidiary controlled by the founding Ramzan family.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite the store closures and job cuts, a significant portion of the retailer\u2019s staff members are expected to be saved under its restructuring, w<\/span>ith 42 stores to continue operating under new ownership.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quiz CEO Sheraz Ramzan said: \u201cWe are deeply sorry to those affected by the store closures, including our retail colleagues.
