eBay is the latest tech firm to announce mass layoffs as it said it was cutting 1,000 jobs to \u201cbetter position\u201d the business for long-term growth.<\/p>\n

The decision will see the online marketplace axe 9% of its full-time global workforce, according to a memo written to employees\u00a0by eBay chief executive Jamie Iannone.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cWhile we are making progress against our strategy, our overall headcount and expenses have outpaced the growth of our business.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cTo address this, we\u2019re implementing organisational changes that align and consolidate certain teams to improve the end-to-end experience, and better meet the needs of our customers around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to the job cuts, Iannone said the online giant will also scale back the number of contracts within its \u201calternative workforce\u201d over the coming months.<\/p>\n

This is the second round of layoffs at eBay within a year, which revealed it had cut 500 employees, representing 4% of its total workforce, last February.<\/p>\n
