In Episode 185 of the Creative Shop Talk Podcast, Dr.<br \/>\nAshley Margeson joins me for a dynamic discussion about burnout,<br \/>\nincluding what it is, and methods for prevention and recovery. If<br \/>\nyou are like many of my retailers and have said things like \u201cI love<br \/>\nwhat I do, but\u2026\u201d \u201cI just need to hustle through this one<br \/>\nevent\/season\/month\u2026\u201d This conversation is for you.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">What is burnout?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Burnout has been studied since the 1970s. It is an<br \/>\ninteresting phenomenon that the WHO set as a true diagnosis only a<br \/>\nfew years ago, identifiable by three key symptoms: depressive-like<br \/>\nfeelings, apathy towards your work (whether it be at home,<br \/>\nentrepreneurship, etc), and a loss of productivity\/performance.<br \/>\nBurnout is tough to recognize at its earliest stages because we<br \/>\nkeep justifying it with logic.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Dr. Ashley explains that burnout occurs when we<br \/>\noveruse adrenaline as our main energy source. The longer we use<br \/>\nadrenaline as energy, cortisol production is suppressed. Cortisol<br \/>\nis your energy &amp; stress response hormone that should rise in the<br \/>\nmorning and stay steady throughout the day. As entrepreneurs, our<br \/>\nfirst instinct is often to just \u201cdo more,\u201d which leads to living on<br \/>\nadrenaline. Living on adrenaline leads to burnout.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Managing Burnout Like A Bank Account<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">An easy way to think about managing burnout is to<br \/>\nthink of a bank account. Like a bank account withdrawal, our energy<br \/>\nis depleted for things we spend it on. Similarly, an energy<br \/>\n\u201cdeposit\u201d can be made into our bank through things like eating<br \/>\nhealthy meals and adequate sleep.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">4 Modes\/Stages of Burnout:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">1. Savings\/Investing Mode: Early Stage Burnout: We<br \/>\nhave lots of deposits coming in so we are able to \u201cspend\u201d our<br \/>\nenergy\/adrenaline.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">2. Paycheck to Paycheck: In this mode, there is just<br \/>\nenough energy coming in to deal with what\u2019s going out.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">3. Overdraft: There is no longer enough energy coming<br \/>\nin to cover what is going out. At this stage, you aren\u2019t quite<br \/>\napathetic, moreso irritated. You start putting things off.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">4. The creditors are calling: In this stage, you are<br \/>\nno longer getting out of bed. Once you get to this stage, you may<br \/>\nneed medical intervention and recovery can take months and<br \/>\nmonths.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One of the things that Dr. Ashley points out early on<br \/>\nin our conversation is that burnout can\u2019t necessarily be avoided.<br \/>\nRather, severe burnout should be managed\/prevented so that recovery<br \/>\ncan be a walk outside vs. 18 months of rest. From a retail<br \/>\nperspective, this could mean identifying what you can do in Q1 &#8211; Q3<br \/>\nthat will limit the energy withdrawals you are making in Q4 that<br \/>\ncan lead to burnout.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Dr. Ashley explains that energy deposits can take the<br \/>\nform of 30 second \u201cglimmers\u201d throughout your day, deposits that<br \/>\ntake 5-15 minutes, and deposits that take over 20 minutes.<br \/>\nOftentimes, we are so focused on the energy deposits that take more<br \/>\nthan 20 minutes (having dinner with a friend, for example) that we<br \/>\nmiss the smallest deposits (\u201cglimmers\u201d like a glass of water, a<br \/>\npost-it note on the computer, etc). These are the sources that give<br \/>\nus small, sustainable bumps in energy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The \u201ccornerstone\u201d deposits are the ones we should be<br \/>\nspending our energy on: sleep, fueling, self-awareness, and<br \/>\nmovement.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cNo one ever gets to burnout because they failed. We<br \/>\nburn out because we care about showing up and doing the right<br \/>\nthings.\u201d &#8211; Dr. Ashley<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Dr. Ashley\u2019s advice:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">1. Determine what stage of burnout you are<br \/>\nin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">2. Make a list of deposits that give you energy in<br \/>\neach of the three timeframes listed above.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">3. Of the cornerstone deposits, which matters most to<br \/>\nyou?
