On<br \/>\nEpisode 183 of the Creative Shop Talk Podcast, fellow retail<br \/>\nbusiness coach Gwen Bortner and I turned on the mics for a little<br \/>\nimpromptu chat about retail business operations. Like me, Gwen has<br \/>\na background in retail. Her coaching business focuses on the<br \/>\noperations of her clients\u2019 businesses so that their businesses<br \/>\nsupport their lives rather than the other way around.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In our coaching careers, Gwen and I have found that<br \/>\nafter the start-up phase of business is over (in my experience 2-3<br \/>\nyears after start-up), business owners are spending their energy<br \/>\nmostly on marketing, in reality, it\u2019s often the operations of the<br \/>\nbusiness that also needs our top attention and consistent fine<br \/>\ntuning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In order to move the needle in your business, the<br \/>\nfirst step is to identify where the bottleneck is.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Gwen\u2019s clients participate in a rating exercise called<br \/>\nThe GEARS Assessment. It is an assessment of operations and is<br \/>\ndesigned to be completely subjective. Essentially, you evaluate 5<br \/>\noperational aspects of your business on a scale of 1-4.
