\nmember Jessica Gebauer. Jess owns Krysset Artisan Boutique & Market
\nin Yardley, PA: a shop full of unique products and gifts made by
\nartists all over the United States and Canada. Jess\u2019s business
\nstarted as a monthly subscription box and evolved into a brick and
\nmortar when she realized the subscription box was limited and she
\nhad bigger dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nWorking with makers has its challenges: being able to meet margins,
\nbeing able to pay staff, etc. Jess\u2019s advice is to focus on makers
\nwho are set up to do wholesale and want to sell their goods to
\nindependent retail shops like Krysset. Jess uses Faire and other
\nwholesale marketplaces, trade shows, local craft shows, and years
\nof experience to find her vendors. Krysset has over 100 vendors in
\nrotation.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nWe talked a bit about Jess\u2019s journey to CEO. It has not been
\nlinear, as most shop owners will tell you! Jess describes opening
\nher shop as being on the water skis attached to the boat, rather
\nthan being the one actually driving the boat, which is so true and
\nan analogy I love.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nJess opened Krysset in September 2021 as the pandemic lingered. She
\ndescribes her first year as \u201creally (really, really) rough.\u201d She
\nhad a number of challenges she was facing in her personal life,
\nleading to her first hire: her current shop manager,
\nMichael.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nHer CEO hat has been coming out more and more in 2022 and 2023 as
\nshe settled into her shop, something we focus on inside the
\nRetailer\u2019s Inner Circle.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nHere are a few very simple marketing ideas that have been working
\nwell for Jess and Krysset:<\/span><\/p>\n
\n1.<\/span>
\nTreating their customers well and with respect when they come in
\nthe door. Jess\u2019s employees intuitively know that the people coming
\nthrough the door want to be treated as a friend. It is so important
\nto hire people who believe in genuine hospitality.<\/span><\/p>\n
\n2.<\/span>
\nUpdating the exterior of her retail store. With the help and
\nsuggestions of the Inner Circle community, Krysset got an exterior
\nmakeover that brought new customers into the shop. Immediately
\nfollowing making some changes, her foot traffic
\nmultiplied.<\/span><\/p>\n
\n3.<\/span>
\nCarrying products that aren\u2019t carried at every boutique on the East
\nCoast.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nrecently why she opened an independent retail store when \u201cAmazon
\nexists\u201d and we both have strong opinions on that question as you
