Stores will continue to trade as normal for the time being and staff will continue to be paid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilko, which was founded in the 1930s in Leicester and grew to 400 stores,\u00a0has been struggling for some time.<\/p>\n<p>Its cash flow issues became evident last year when it deferred supplier payments\u00a0and asked landlords to move to\u00a0monthly rents.<\/p>\n<p>It was dealt a major blow when credit insurers Allianz Trade and Atradius pulled cover in October.<\/p>\n<p>This has made life difficult for Wilko ever since with many suppliers demanding payment for goods upfront, which led to poor availability across its stores for the past year.<\/p>\n<p>It was given a lifeline when it secured \u00a340m in funding from restructuring specialist Hilco late last year, and new CEO Jackson, who took the helm late last year, sought to cut costs and rebuild funds by axing more than 400 jobs and selling its Worksop distribution centres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Jackson said: \u201cSince January and with the help of retail advisers and experts, we\u2019ve been facing into problems and have seen real progress against many areas of our plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cWe\u2019ve made significant savings across our cost base and have been considering various options based on advice given regarding our store costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cWe\u2019ve all fought hard to keep this incredible business intact but must concede that time has run out and now, we must do what\u2019s best to preserve as many jobs as possible, for as long as is possible, by working with our appointed administrators.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Subscribe to Retail Gazette for free<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"x_al\">Sign up\u00a0here\u00a0to g<\/span><span class=\"x_al\">et the latest news straight into your inbox each morning<\/span><strong><span class=\"al\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3>Wilko fell behind the value competition<\/h3>\n<p>Wilko had filled the gap left by the collapse of Woolworths in 2008, but has since faced increasing competition from other value retailers, such as B&amp;M, Poundland and Home Bargains, which have all been in expansion mode and have stolen market share from the retailer.<\/p>\n<p>GlobalData retail research director Patrick O\u2019Brien said that its rivals \u201creally eroded its competitive position and undercut Wilko on price\u201d, which has created long-term damage to the business.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2015, B&amp;M, Home Bargains and The Range have all overtaken <span class=\"markrr9cw53i8\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Wilko<\/span> for non-food market share with\u00a0Wilko the only one of these retailers not to gain share over this period, according to GlobalData.<\/p>\n<p>Wilko recorded sales declines in its last four financial years, with revenue falling by 18.6% between 2017\/18 and 2021\/22.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the \u00a335.9m loss it made in its last financial year, was more than its operating profit from the previous four years.<\/p>\n<p>GlobalData senior data analyst Matt Walton said that the retailer has been \u201ccaught in a pincer movement\u201d on both price and design.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been outflanked on price by the likes of B&amp;M, Home Bargains and The Range while it is unable to compete on design with the likes of Dunelm or Ikea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Click here to sign up to Retail Gazette\u2018s free daily email newsletter<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/online-workshops-list\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-496\" src=\"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/RETAIL-ONLINE-TRAINING-728-X-90.png\" alt=\"Retail Online Training\" width=\"729\" height=\"91\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/RETAIL-ONLINE-TRAINING-728-X-90.png 729w, https:\/\/dmsretail.com\/RetailNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/RETAIL-ONLINE-TRAINING-728-X-90-300x37.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 729px) 100vw, 729px\" \/><\/a><\/p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wilko collapses into administration Wilko has formally collapsed into administration, appointing PwC to lead the process, as 12,000 jobs are put at risk.
